Ok this is a really stupid question. why not just use the L1 and L2 manually? Once L2 hits redline you are doing 60+ MPH anyway and simply put into D after that. Meaning that we really only get on it up to 60 or 70 before we ease up on the peddle.

L1 means that it is in 1st gear and 1st only. L2 means that the trans can use 1st or 2nd gear as it sees fit. This box allows you to up shift and down shift as you see fit. Your technique only works for upshifting under acceleration. If you are out on the trail, or towing, it helps to be able to select the gear you want.
