Does it do it right when you step on the gas, or after it starts moving....and is it as the ground surface changes, like as it drops from your driveway to the street or something?

i just bought the car last week , and besides anf oil/filter change i have done nothing to the car,

it does this when you start to back up , and on any surface or speed.:banghead: diddin't know that you could change wheel bearing of fwd cars, iam used too full size cars like a caprice,
or crown victoria.

thanks

The front wheel bearing is a cartridge unit that includes the flange/hub. Inspect the lower control arm (A-Frame) bushings, upper strut mount bushings, and CV joints.

You can have an assistant hold the brake and alternate between D and R on the transmission while you watch the wheels from outside the vehicle. If there is any noticable movement, it may help inpoint the source.

...Sounds like loose cradle bolts. Four 18mm-head bolts that secure the engine/trans 'cradle' to the body.

Also get a torque wrench on the ft axles shaft nuts, 36mm deep and tighten to 185 lb/ft. Not knowing the history here, got to go over everything.

That's what I was wondering...although that's more common on Fords and Hondas, as far as I've seen...

I have an incredibly loud groan that comes from my left front occaisionally when I back up with the wheels cut hard...It is so startling, sounds like bigtime contact rub or something, like you'd expect to hear if the caliper was hitting the wheel or something...never have found it...

thanks for all of your thoughts guys!!!
drove the car today and as always it ran great, excellent mpg,
but there was a new noise i heard today, with the wheel turned to the left
i bounced the car up and down and all around , and there was a sqeak from the top of the (strut tower)? on the passangers side of the car but not from the drivers side?

Uhh, not defending GM here, but this an 8 year old car. Take the cover off the strut mount ,upper, and see if you can feel the noise in the upper isolator.

Luminas and weird front end noises are no strangers...there's been more TSB's about suspension noises than anything else on them, far as I've seen....I ignore harmless noises easily, so it doesn't bother me....

GM didn't make it with the noises. Those noises developed over time through use and neglected service, or abuse. You've been given lots of ideas and suggestions, but so far we've seen no results of inspections or tests other than the fact that the engine moutns are dry. My '96 has 143,000 miles and is dead quiet on turns, bumps, and gear engagement. It sees salted roads every year. It also gets regular service and inspections.

Try some of the suggested ideas and report your findings, please. It will help us all - Especially you.

Nicely done, seconded.:screwy: :nono: :crying:

I checked the four cradle bolt today and they were not loose,
bolth the engine and trans fluid mounts are in good condition ,
brakes are good , however i did find a wet (onthe bottom) boot on the
steering rack drivers side, the fluid was not from the 4l60e tranny ,
the cv drive shaft nuts were tight too

so iam still lost, this was a seldom used old county govt car .
that maybe oart of the problem as well.

thanks

Ha, i have that same wet cv joint boot on the drivers side. Its coolant, and its not leaking enought for me to worry about it..... yet. I have a little creak creak creak going on up front of mine also when i go slowly around corners. I think it has to do with the rack and pinion, but not for sure. sorry i couldnt be of more help. try to bounce the car or turn the wheel back and fourth or both at the same time and have some one listen to where the noise might be coming from. I have tried on my car, and not found anything out of the ordinary.

thanks for the reply , yeah i have tryed the bounce and listen thing ,
i cant find anything broken/loose or damaged.
the rack boot (on the drivers side on the bottom of the boot) is wet with a reddish fluid and it matches whats in the p/s pump so its p/s fluid, no coolant leaks in this car , i changed the dexcool/distilled water mix yesterday. along with an oil filter change. and a new rad cap.

i took the cover off of the strut towers too and the rubber is plyable and soft, but the pass side strut did something strange the shaft came up when i bounced the car up and down but on the drivers side it did not?

do i need to change this strut?

thanks again to all who have helped me , lee

Yeah, I think I have the same problem with my 91 z34 lumina, The car has 188K miles on it. Runs real well but I got that noise, put it into reverse and back out, turn my wheel to the left and I hear a cluck, I think its my ground effect peice hitting on something or my wheel hitting something, but it runs like a top still so Im just kinda ignoring it, but would like to fix it if possible.

You might want to check your ball joints. i have a 97 and the ball joint just started to make that noise. and now the ball joint is busted and my right fender is smashed in. so i would check that
