Not sure if this is the right forum or not.
Met a man and his 48 DeSoto today. What a treat.
He's having some engine ("Flat six.") trouble with ocassional stalling.
Told him I'd try to find out some info on where to go for help.
Just a Dodge or Plymouth dealer to start?
Someplace a bit more esoteric?
An old timer with false teeth?
The man and his machine are here in Dearborn, Mi. (Suburban Detroit area)
Any suggestions?
Any ideas on engine swaps and modified mounts?

I'd look at the carburetor first. 1948 engines just need spark, air and gas, no sensors. If the carb is ok, then the points probably need some attention.

A lot of times, people put 12V coils on the older 6V flatheads. That and a worn set of points, and you'll stall half the time. The 12V coil will work, but not as well as it should. If you have trouble finding as 6V coil, the one off a 6V Vw Bug (negative ground!) will work (and is still available)

other troubles include valve lash set too tight (won't restart when warm) and clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, clogged fuel pickup in the tank.

Rarely did the flatheads have Carb troubles that aren't completely obvious (like pouring gas out of the bowl, or loose on the manifold)

These engines are just about bulletproof. it's rare to find one that still spins over that won't run. I had a 41 and 48 Plymouth (one Busnessmans Coupe and a Special Deluxe 4dr) never had to do much of anything to either motor, but the hydroshift thing and brakes were a bitch.

Haven't seen him in a week or two and am not sure if he registered/joined the forum yet or not.
I'e seen the car in the resturaunt parking lot so he is driving it at least once in a while. Maybe the problem comes up only after its at operating temp.
