Shit I am so pissed!
I finally took the Goat to the track with some friends. I figured Id run a 13.8, 13.9 since I cant drive worth a shit and Ive only had it for 2 months.
so the track is 100 miles out of town, we get there after and hour and a half drive and have like 10 minutes before were on the track.
I set up, I try to launch and the car just sits there spining and hopping!
ran a 15.4! WTF?
I go again and spin just a bit but still get no traction for a good 30ft. despite the fact that I launched at like 2800 rpms. the shit just wont hook up!
ran a 14.9
I gave up after that.
there was another guy there who had a 05 GTO and ran a 13.32
he came up to me and told me he had the same problems when he got his. Says the tires are junk and the track wassnt in good shape that night.
I dont care about track conditions! its not supposed to run 15s
so after two days of bashing my head I guess the only logical solutions are to 1. sell the GTO and buy a Scion xA or 2. get tires for the track.
can anyone recomend good tires? I have 2 spare rims at home so all I need are the rubbers and slap them on just for the strip whenever I go.
Thx guys, and yeah feel free to bash my head in.

Now honey, we all told you that the track was bad. For pete's sake right before you ran there was oil on the floor!! Two guys ( i think or maybe it was one) had to come and mop it up before you ran against that little P.O.S. corolla or whatever it was, on top of that you can tell the tracked looked wet up. It just wasn't a good night to run.
BTW.... you aren't selling the goat and you sure the heck ain't buying a Scion!!!

Wow, only trapping 96mph with 400hp?
My LS1 with a Blown clutch/bad traction was trapping 105mph... (ET was 14.3 @ about 2000ft DA)
I think you just need more seat time homie... sorry to say it, but it seems like it's driver error, Maybe you were having an offday? I have those, where I just can't get a smooth shift to save my life. :dunno:
Oh, and BF Goodrich drag radials are a good buy if you want some traction.

I dunno, seems weird it trapped so low.

^Good point. Even with a slow 1/4, it should have a higher trap?
-The Stig-
06-25-2006, 01:41 AM
Yeah, cause with shitty traction... it should still be gaining speed at the end of the 1/4 mile and trap high, even if the ET is slow.
With a trap of mid 90mph it seems as though he might be lifting before the traps? Or, just not fully on it.
I see no reason why that car shouldn't be trapping 104+mph.

well I did drive 100 miles to the place with the AC on for an hour and a half, then got to the the track and was lined up in front of the lights 10 minutes later.
The other GTO owner told me that the air temp sensor is located right above the radiator hose and that he usually lets his car cool down for 45 minutes before he runs. Other wise the car thinks its 200 degrees out.
could it be that? maybe the car was pulling back or something?
damn it, if it wassnt for Gotian and my friend Jorge worried about heat soak and stupid cops I would of booked 100mph and been there 50 minutes earlier!
pleanty of time to cool down.

If you're getting wheel hop buy some traction bars. I bought a set from Competition Engineering for my S-10 and that knocked it out cold. That and a set of Mickey Thompson ET Streets should help you with your traction issues. Of course those don't help driver error though.

All I can say Mushman, is practice your launches down a deserted street. Get a good feel for the car. Approach the lauch as if you just got the car, relearn it.
Then go back to the track and try it again. You can only get better from here.

Yeah I had to shift to 4th right before the marker.
If I had kept it in 3rd it would of hit rev limiter.
I crossed at about 5200 rpms in 4th.

Actually, if my calculations are correct, 3rd gear would of taken you to 100mph. So, you could of kept it in 3rd the whole way...
If you crossed the line at 5200rpm in 4th gear, you should of been doing 114mph...
Now, if you crossed the line at 4200rpm in 4th gear, you'd be doing 95mph like you said you trapped. That clearly shows you short shifted the piss out of your car... how come? :(

Wow...that's makes me feel alot better with my 14.51 @99 in the Cobalt. ;)
Tough break, I know how shitty a bad day at the track can make ya feel.
Like Matty said, you're short shifting like mad. I finish the 1/4 mile in 3rd while I'm in the Cobalt and you need to do the same in the Goat.
Also, if you practice your launching on the street and get it down pretty well, don't expect to bring that same exact technique to the strip. The track has a much different surface than any public roads do. So you're gonna have to sorta relearn your launching every visit to the track...at least somewhat anyway.
Oh yeah, don't think tires will be your savior. They can help a lot, but not near as much as just learning to drive. I'd say get it down so you can run in the low 14's at least, then get a new set of stickies.

et = driver skill and feel for car
mph= pony power per hour.
i think i could beat that one civic si in a golf cart. its got a 75 shot of nos on it.
it probably was your car. sometimes the throttle won't open up for you. one of my friends has that problem on his gto.

LOL, how'd I know you wouldn't run a great track time :p
Been there, done that. That is why I wanted you and Gotian to post times. Posting what someone else ran is foolish, but we all do it. Somehow I think that Gotian ran a 15 sec. pass. What was his 1/4 mile time?
Got ya beat by alot (13.1 sec. at 109 mph here ~ corrected a 12.9 at 110).
Practice, Practice, Practice. What was your 60' time? For every 1 tenth shaved you take .15 sec. off of your 1/4 mile. On street tires my best w/ the lousy 3.42 gearing was a 2.2 (I believe the 4.10's brought it down to 2.1 though).

Yeah, I know a guy from another forum with the same mods as Gotian. He ran a low 15 sec. pass. He kept thinking he'd run a 13 sec. pass.
I don't hate you, and you don't have to redeem yourself. My personal advise for you is to slap on some BFG Drag Radials. DON'T BUY NITTOS!!! They suck. The Mickey Thompson's are nice, but they will break your half shafts in a heartbeat.
Here's some advise, and I guarranty that you will run faster if you follow them:
1. Launch the car at 1200-1400 rpms. Roll into the throttle. Don't mash the gas. Wait until 15 feet and then hammer it.
2. Play with the tire pressure. Try bringing it down to 25 psi, and work your way down from there.
3. Take out spare tire, tire jack, floor mats, and whatever loose things you have in the car (i.e. music cd's, magazines, etc...).
4. Launch once you see the 3rd ember (yellow light).
5. Shift as close as you can at redline. Some cars actually do better short shifting (Like the Mach 1 stangs). In short, play with it.
6. Pop up hood, and let the car cool after your run.
7. Push car as close as you can to the staging lanes. Try not to turn on the ignition until your run. I push my car all the time, until I get past the guy checking my ticket.
8. Don't worry soo much about beating your previous time. It's all for fun. No one is perfect, and if they say so, they are full of shit.

yeah what was your 60ft.....my best is a 2.217 on streets.....if your spining that bad off line try feathering the clutch and then rolling out.....cars with torque deffinately should not launch at high rpm.....and yeah even though you spun real bad you should have a higher trap unless you sandbagged but I doubt you did that since you said you gave it 100%.....

I don't know about this personally, never done it, but you could try it if you're bone dead for ideas, but someone should yell at me after this post on how stupid i am for posting Geoff's advice.
Get a bottle of NOS or NX/ Nitrous Oxide. Spray down your grille and intercooler and bumpers. I heard it'll make your car trap higher, and improve your 60' by a tenth or so.
Is your car N/A or FI or ? Also, does it have installed Nitrous system?:screwy:

Well, it's a stock GTO... so no it doesn't have Nitrous, and it doesn't have an intercooler.
I doubt spraying the nitrous onto the intake filter and such would result in a better 60'. That's determined by driver skill and suspension/tire setups.
Why would you spray the bumper?... that makes no sense at all... :disappoin

Have you ever done 4,000rpm launches before on the street... if so what were the results... and if the results were what happened on the track, what made you think it'd change on the strip?

Yeah you guys are really launching at high rpms. You must like wheelspin. When i'm on street tires I rarely launch above 2K rpms in my car. In a 4 banger FWD car I might launch at 3K rpms, but nothing over that, unless I was slipping the clutch something fierce.

2k for me......2.5k if I slip it......but I still get wheel hop....

4k was my 1st launch 2nd was 3k and 3rd was 2.5 which got me a pretty good 60ft, it was a 2.38something, but uh... i forgot to remove my traction and when I went into 2nd I lost too much speed as the computer tried to compensate for the lost traction.....sucks....

I read a hot rod magazine article on a GTO that they put a turbo or something on I think. They said the huge drawback with the GTO was heat soak. The car would lose major power once it got warm. They got one good pass and then it slowed way down each consecutive run as it got hotter. Even with the turbo it was just a little faster for one pass, then because of heat it was back to the stock ET after awhile.
A cold air intake, and time to cool down between runs with the intake iced down, and a better launch would probably help a lot.

I'm sure Mushashi will improve time wise. I think he can cut a low 14 sec. pass on street tires at over 103mph. In Florida's heat that is decent. I dunno about you running mid 13's stock Musashi. I think you'll need DR's for that. Florida, like California, is known for it's heat. Heck, it's also humid as heck out there.

Somehow I doubt that. I bet his SL would run a high 15 sec. pass.
Still though, Mushashi you need to redeem yourself soon, or just continue doing roll races against people :p
Good thing we never raced :D I have near 2 sec. on your 1/4 mile wise (New times may be pending for me this year. I bet i'll be in the 12's).

Believe it or not, the SL's are capable of running into the high 14's stock.

Depends on what track you are talking about. The only way one's gonna run 14's here is if it's dropped off a cliff. They run 16's over here.

haha, and musashi is capable of dong 13s...i think as his thread proves, what something CAN do and ACTUALLY does are too things.
At least now we have legitimate facts to back up giving ppl shit for talking about what their cars CAN do.
Bad luck musashi....practice, my friend. 400hp can't be easy to drive.

Not only 400 hp, its the torque that would make it run all over the place. how many gears can you get a good tire squall out of at full throttle shifting??

We've got a guy around where I live that has a cammed GTO w/125 shot and he can barely squeeze out a mid-12. So I guess you shouldn't feel THAT bad :-p

Weather and DA play a big role in times, so does the driver. Even th MPH is effected by the driver, not as much as ET, but it does effect it. Granny shifting will slow your momentum and you will not have as high of a trap speed, shifting right before the traps is what prob killed the trap the most though since you go through two lights for speed to be determined. IF you passed the first in third or right after you shifted to 4th it hurt you. You need to get better gearing to be able to use almost all of your 4th right when you cross the last light. I used to cross the line at 6700rpm in 4th which was damn near perfect for a 1/4 run in my car. I wouldn't think about selling your car though just because it didn't perform up to your standards when you know yourself that you need a lot of improvement. If you have doubts, let someone you trust that can drive their ass off take it for a couple passes and see how it performs.

Here's a true story. I've got a buddy named Steve. He has countless trophies for winning bracket races. I let him and his buddy (Who was suppose to be a sick driver) drive my car. They essentially friend the clutch, and had worse times then me. Sometimes the issue isn't the driver. It's the setup of the car. Look into the suspension system Musashi, and try to get that gtech so that you can practice.
