Okay so i'm looking for a 4wd suv/wagon vehicle and i'm torn between a legacy outback(preferably auto and loaded with goodies) from 97-2000 and a chevy blazer lt/ls 96-2000. I have a kick ass panasonic deck single DIN size along with 2 12" kenwood subs in a bandpass box i will put in. I heard that you can't install aftermarket decks in some outbacks. is this true? what legacys/outbacks can you not install decks in? and will these things still be relatively fast/peppy with a sub box in the trunk? 4wd helps i just don't know if the weight in the rear plays a huge factor performance wise.

This is an old thread, and OP has probably already moved on, but I'll add my 2 cents worth.
I installed an aftermarket stereo in my wifes '99 Outback wagon, and had no problems. I bought both the stereo and install kit from Crutchfield, and everything went together nicely.
Since the OEM stereo was bigger than the standard DIN size of the aftermarket stereo, we also ended up with a small storage tray that we didn't have before.
