For five grand? Wont run. Not any of the fast ones at least. Most of the crate motors alone, not including shipping, install if you have someone else do it, and mods, cost over five grand.

I say DSM. 1G AWD.

DSM mainly because for 5 grand you can have one that runs 11's

and i say this because, i know of one for sale that will get into the 11's with a little tuning tlc

Put it in the bank for a couple years and ride a bike.

As somebody (don't remember who) said

Fast
Cheap
Reliable

You can only pick 2. You want fast and cheap, it'll spend alotta time on jackstands anyway. So why not save yourself the $5,500 and trouble, and just start riding your bike now.

If you can only bankroll $5,500, chances are, you wont be able to fund, fuel, or insure most fast cars.

You could get a TD. They are just hard to find in really good shape, well, for sale anyway.

Keep your current F-body and save up a bit to drop in a 350. It'll look better and handle better than a Fox body and it'll have some modding potential, which your current 305 does not really have.

OH SHIT! Cassies bro, wassup? good ta see ya back.

Well if I had 5 grand as a budget Id get the DSM. get it like for 2 grand and add 3 in mods, youd be tapping into the 11's :smokin:

If you want to go fast then get a motorcycle. But for $5,000 you might be able to find a foxbody allready moded, I dont know where you live but most dsm's around here are hard to find with a turbo and if you do most arent in good shape...i had to drive almost 500 miles to get my Laser Rsturbo.

But you might find a good one for $5000. You might be able to find a moded civic with turbo or supercharger, ive seen some for around that much.

Good luck!

yeah i was thinking about doing that with getting a 350 but the only thing is its an auto and if i put money into that i would want to make it a manual and that would include a new transmission, clutch evertything and alot of work, the work i would enjoy though i am going to BOCCES next year for auto tech but how much do u think that would cost to change it into a manual and get the 350 or would i just be better off selling it and getting a new car?, what is a DSM also i have never even heard of them?

Why not just stick with the 700R4 that you've got now? You can have it built up nicely for around $400-$700 and have a very stout, slick shifting tranny. Autos are fun as hell when they are built up and then put behind a nice healthy V8. Nothing kicks the ass end out of a car like a hard shifting auto.

I still vote that you spend about $3500 fixing up your cars engine/tranny (assuming you get a 350). Then another $1000 or so doing suspension mods and other small things here and there. It'll turn out nice.

That's not 5,000...or even close.

Now, a stock Fox body in good condition with 100,000+ miles can be had for 3500-5000. But that doesnt leave any room for mod money after fixing all the things that have gone wrong with it...like everything in the interior of the car falling off.

A friend of mine did that. Dropped in a bored 350 crate motor into his 84ish TA. His is auto too. That thing makes tons of torque, but realistically it just spins tires through 4th. A decent rear should also be taken into account, and he is considering another tranny and suspension mods as well. After all that, it can ended up being over 5k, but I will agree, it has the potential to be a badass ride with a nice 350 in there.

Unless this guy really hates the Fbody he's in right now, I just don't see throwing it away and getting something else (something else that might end up being FWD as well...ewww) especially when he's in the 5,000 price range. It's got so much going for it.

V8 + RWD + the right to grow a mullet = A+ car!

i see no reason why he would pay that much for a car that old. im sure he could find one around 1000. especially a 4 banger, then an engine swap. it could be done with 5k not problem. or just get a 302 foxbody for even 3.5k like you said, 1500 in mods will get you places with a 302. besides the 305 he has really doesnt have a lot of potential.

as far as looks, take a look at that orange one in that guys sig, that thing is beautiful. i might give my left nut for that thing.

Yeah, I'm back...life is pretty shitty, but I'm making the best of the situation.

And as consensus shows, DSM seems to be the big vote. Hell, I know people selling ones that are already into the 12s, maybe lower, for under 5k.

They'll chirp alright, but a manual just doesnt quite wind up and let loose like a built auto. It's a different feel by far. Both fun in their own ways though.

For $5k you could have a Jetfire MGB.

215chp stock Turbo/H2O/Alcohol 215ci single carb V8
1950lbs(including driver)

14 second 1/4 mile car.

EDIT-Info changed. Had wrong engine in mind.

That orange car is beautiful, but do you think it is any where near this guy's 5,000 budget? No, if the rest of the car is near the condition of the exterior, that's a $9,000+ 5.0. Also, lets say he buys a fox body in decent condition for $3,500 (if you spend anything less than this it will most likely be trashed).
It still won't have a great interior or exterior, and it sucks to drive a car that's rough on the outside and inside. So you're going buy one for $3,500 and spend a minimum of $1,000 in just fixing the car back up to par. Now you're at $4,500, with only $500 left of your $5,000 budget. $500, doesn't get you shit, even on a 5.0. The best you're going to do with $500 is a set of gears (3.55's are best and run around $300), a CAI for $100 or so, a rebuilt kit for the distributor and a Mustang keychain.

I still say that if his current Fbody is in good shape, to keep that and drop an Lt1 or TPI 350 in it.

I guess the other way sounds better for me, huh?

Sure, he could grab a corvette, or dsm......but how many people in the world own a Jetfire MGB? I can count them on one hand.

Jetfire is an Oldsmobile engine. MGB is a Biritish car. Both are popular enough that it's not very hard at all to find parts. Besides that, the rear-end is from an S-10, stock steering is fucking strong, and who gives a shit about looks? My 65 MGB cost a whopping $200 for an engine swap. ENTIRE Engine re-wired from 6v to 12v system, all bulbs changed, carbs serviced, for under $150. Took me bout 2 weeks in all.

Merkur is expensive. I've got a couple buddies with XR4ti's.
