96 quest trans takes 1400 rpm to engage torque converter in Drive less in low

I just changed to trans filter in my 96 quest and I suspect I did not get it in correctly. I am a mechanic for a living and just do not have time or good enough picture of the valve body assy going into the trans to tell where a large spring goes that fell out when lowering the valve body out. The paper thin gasket on the lowest of 3 valve body stack I removed a lot of due to cracking of it (but used permatex grey good stuff import very thin to repace it and cleaned it all out of orfices). This happened when I attempted installing it because of where I thought the spring went (high spring pressure) causing a lot of very difficult effort to overcome the spring tension to get it up into position and bolts started. I am unsure if I have the spring in wrong. The IPC pics I have from the dealer do not show the spring good enough resolution with even a magnifier to tell where it goes. And the pics are so bad I can not tell wven which one is the spring. The symptoms are the torque converter engages when first shifting into drive but dropps out after less that a second and it does the same thing just to a lesser degree in low 1 and low 2 but not in reverse that I can tell. The comverter engages with a harsh clunk at about 1400 rpm and if I keep on tha gas it drives and shifts normally otherwise. This is only a problem when not moving from a stop. Or barely moving. I can hear the torque converter fall out at very low crawling speeds when letting off the gas. THis one is a bit baffling to someone who knows manual trans and is good with engine stuff but not experienced with auto trans. I put the spring above one of the captive nuts in the front drivers side corner of the valve body where I saw spring wear marks the same size at the machined area that was round below a big black (plastic I think) valve (in the trans upper casting) The spring seemed to fit correctly in the recess of the black valve. I need real help soon I have ond day left to get this right so we can go to CO on vacation the four children and my wife have been waiting on for a year and a half and have already paid for and can not get money back. I have done thourogh search and can not find this problem yet on any site so far. Only ove vage refernece to changing the seals when you change the filter (I am assuming the black 3 or 4round ones where the valve body stack contacts the trans housing.
