Timing Chains-cont.Dyno247365 06-13-2006, 08:25 PM I have the parts, free space in the garage and the nissan. So what do I have to remove from the engine to replace the chains and tensioners? Thanks slideways... 06-14-2006, 12:41 AM remove accessories from the front of engine makes it easier, otherwise the valve cover, cam gears, crank pulley, and the front timing cover. the water pump sits on top of the timing cover, so theoretically you could take the cover off with the water pump still attached, but you may end up getting coolant in the oil pan that way. the only thing is the timing cover is sandwiched between the oil pan and the head, so its best to take the head off and lift it off the oil pan. if you want, you can take the oil pan off and take the cover off, but you will have to recompress part of the headgasket where the head and cover meet, so its up to you as to whether you want to do that or not. its not recommended at all but it is possible if you dont have the money to replace the head gasket. either way its best to scrape the oil pan(if you dont remove it just scrape what you see.) and regasket it using RTV. do you know how the chains are set up? the lower chain runs around the crank and around a sprocket in the middle of the block, and the upper one runs from the middle sprocket to the cam gears. oh and you can check the condition of the oil pump while your at it, since it sits under a plate in the front timing cover with 5 screws holding the plate on. also check your front main seal because you may as well replace it now if it needs it. the whole process is a headache but not terribly hard if your a patient person. ricebike 06-15-2006, 02:15 PM you can venture over to nicoclub.com or www.240sx.org forums & download a free FSM for your vehicle... Dyno247365 06-24-2006, 10:07 PM I don't know where to get the FSM from on the site.. Should I drain the oil? Drain the coolant and remove the radiator? I'm taking off the camshaft to replace the chain right? Forget removing the oil pan because I don't feel like installing new gaskets underneath the car. The head has a fairly new gasket itself. So what's the way I should remove things to do it from there? Thanks. ricebike 06-25-2006, 09:30 AM ok, i'll help u search on that website... click on link provided earlier... then click on the forums buttons after that, you can sift via "searching" ---to make it easier, goto this thread click me & scroll down to vancouver's signature...
