What is the reliability of the f250's 3/4 ton? I'm looking at one in great shape, but have been a Chevy man forever. Any help? It has 72k and loaded with the Power Stroke.

What year some of the early power strokes were a joke.

The one I'm looking at is a 2002.

I have a 1995 F250 extended cab power stroke with 238,000+ miles on it and would not (in fact have not) hesitated to head out from Cincinnati to Kansas City, Atlanta, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Harrisburg, Charlotte - any number of places. I have been very happy with mine for the six years I have owned it.

I have a 1997 F350 with a 7.3L Powerstroke. That engine is one of the most reliable diesels on the market as long as it is maintained properly. It is actually an international Navistar diesel. The 2002 is also equiped with an intercooler that gives it an extra 100 horse power. Mine currently has 181,000 miles with almost no problems. Expect to get between 300,000 and 500,000 miles out of it. I love it. My uncle has a 1983 7.3L with over 400,000 miles on it.

The new Ford diesels have a smaller 6.0L Powerstroke. Unlike the 7.3L, it has a lot of maintenance problems.

If the one you are looking at is clean and you can't find any problems in it's maintenance history, you probably won't go wrong buying it. Be sure to have a VIN number trace done on it to get the maintenance and damage history.

I drove a GM turbo charged 6.5L diesel before I bought the Ford. No comparison. I had more problems in the first 95,000 miles than I have had total with the Ford. With the GM I replaced 4 injector pumps, Both rear axle seals twice, one drive shaft, two alternators, Transmission cooling lines, etc... Will probably never go back to GM.

Good luck with the F250.
