I have a '01, 5.3L, 2wd, 80k miles and my rack and pinion has been severly leaking on sharp turns. I looked underneath and it seems as though I have a hole in one of the boots that covers the inner tie-rod.
Does anyone know if replacing this boot should fix my leak?..
any help or suggestions would be great....

Boot is a dust seal only, the leaks are from the rack end seal most likely, you will need an exch rack, unless you can get this done as a seal only job at a dealer, as they have the specific tools to do this job.

Well its at the dealer now.. but they said that once it starts leaking that it should be replaced b/c the internals could be damaged.

Anyone replace one before? What would be a reasonable quote? I know just the rack is $450. I would probably get it done alot sooner if the dealer does it.

450 for a GM reman rack, sounds awfully cheap?

It just got finished, $450 for the rack only 3hrs for labor and $60 for a realignment, ended up being $850 after tax...

I'm hoping the rack is new, but I am not certain....
