Datsun 240z rear end on a 240sx?

Hey i was wondering, i want to change my gay stock 1989 240 rear end to posi, but im looking at options and i was wondering if the 1972 Datsun 240z rear end would fit?? if so would that change my gearing or is it my tranny that does that..cause that car is insane....STOCK!!!..probably a stupid question...but im hungover so.....:uhoh:

Nope, the differential housings are different. The bolt holes don't line up, so you'd need to get some special brackets made up to bolt it in.

And you can get a LSD unit for your rear diff, the '72 240z never came with LSD (non race cars). Only the later years, with the 300zx Turbo did the R200 get LSD. Plus the stock rearend out of a S30 is a R180 which has stupid gearing... 3.3:1 mostly.

Stock you've got a 4.08:1, you'd have to look real hard to find a Z rear diff that came in 4.11:1. Mostly, you'll find 3.7:1 and 3.9:1. Most of which will be non LSD type diffs.

You'll have to buy a LSD regardless.



So basically, no... just go buy yourself a Nismo 2-way LSD and keep your 4.08:1 stock gearing.
