How To Wire Shift Light - End All Guide

I have created this thread to make a definative guide on how to wire a; shift light , rpm activated switch , or tach. I have been trying to find out on this forum for quite some time, but havent found the right information. I have put together all that I have learned here so that any future search will help someone finish their project.

My aplication was for an rmp activated switch and a LED bulb. It was instaled in a 98' Honda Civic 2dr so it is basicly a 6gen civic, but the instal should be universal. There are many ways to do these hook ups, but the ones provided are sure to work.

First- the rpm activated switch has 4 wires. I will give them number names so as not to confuse.

One for +12V=#1
One for tach=#2
One for light (LED)=#3
One for ground=#4

#1 should be hooked up to the back of the accessory socket. There are several screws around the molding that need to be taken off. 3 on each side and then some on the arm rest or back portion of the console. Once these are off pull the back part to the rear to allow the front to pull up. Take off your shift knob by unscrewing and pull the shift boot over the shifter, then pull the front part up at a 45 degree angle to unclip the brackets inside, once you pull them off hard enough the part should slip off. Unscrew the cass player and pull it forward and down. Now push the seat all the way back, get on your back and look under the dash to where the socket is. There are two wires, one black, one yellow, splice #1 with the yellow wire.

#2 needs to go through the firewall. Look under your hood to the back drivers side wall, to find th grommet. Pull it out, looks hard but is easy. Then unbend a coathanger and shove it through then check under your dash by the drivers kick panel to find the hanger. Tape the #2 wire to it and pull it through to the engine bay. Wire it around to the distributer where a group of wires await. Splice it to the thick solid blue wire, this is the tach lead. (If you have a strut bar it is a good idea to wire it under this.)

#3 needs to go to your light. If you are using an LED, wire it to the short prong coming off it because the current is coming the other way. Mount your light. the second prong needs to go to a +12v source, so put it on that same yellow wire behind the socket.(just splice right near the other splice.) NOTE: the prongs are important, the long prong needs to be the one spiced to the yellow wire or it wont light!

#4 can be any screw that is connected to the chasis, such as ones that are near the gauge cluster.

If you make sure all these connections are done right, it is sure to work. These instructions can also prove useful to shift lights and such that come stand alone, just ignore wires you dont have. Again, this is specificly for a 6th GEN Honda Civic EX with a RPW rpm activated switch and LED light. There are many ways to make these connections but if you want a sure hook up, follow this method.
