Replace Engine?

I have a 98 Rodeo with a 3.2L V6 DOHC Engine. For the past few months I have had a ticking that I could only hear around 2500RPM and only when my throttle was open a certain amount. If it was at 2500RPM and my foot was not on the gas it did not make the noise. Beginning yesterday there is now a ticking noise constantly at idle and when I hit the gas it sounds like a person gargaling but louder. I have replaced my Timing Belt and other things. The mechanic that did my timing belt a couple weeks ago said that I need to replace my engine. Someone else has said an exhaust leak. I am looking for any suggestions as my engine still runs so I assume it is not a spun rod or anything really bad as it would not start. Thanks! Oh the noise sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment.

Hi, Had this very issue more than a year ago. Drove me nuts! Thought
it was my timing belt ... etc. Turns out to be a weight vibrating under the
passenger side near the pipes. My mechanic gave it a couple of whacks
with a mallet and the noise is gone. I though for sure it was the engine
too.

I remember seeing someone post about this recently... found it but don't know how to send you the link. search this forum

check the heat sheilds (I recently had this issue too).

check to see if you had your timing belt tensor replaced (commonly it causes a banging noise when it goes bad).
