My car is a 98 Camry 4 cyl.
I'm trying to change timing belt/tensioner etc. but I can't get off the crankshaft pulley. Are the threads reverse? Anyone know any tricks or cautions?

No, it's regular threaded. It's just tight. Borrow an impact wrench or use the old trick of brace breaker bar and bumb the starter. I vote for impact wrench myself, cause i have one, and i wrecked the valves on my truck once trying to remove this nut with a breaker bar.

When the nut is off, you will probably need a puller for the pulley. You dont have to use the toyota one, but you gotta use something similar - they're cheap at harbor freight (and an impact gun, electric, is $40 there if you were thinking of getting one).

Yup, I agree with marc780.

I just replaced my timing belt on a 98 camry. The threads are normal. Mine was on tight too. My impact wrench wasn't strong enough to remove the nut. I finally removed the starter and held the flywheel with a tire-iron while using a breaker bar on the pully bolt. Came off pretty easy.

Steering wheel puller should work

If you pull the crank pulley, don't scratch the sensor ring on the back of the pulley.
