which multimeter to buy?

Hi. I am looking at getting a multimeter but I am not sure which one to go with. Any recomendations/suggestions? Thanks in advance

get a digital one from radio shack or sears.... if you get serious about electrical "stuff" then consider a Fluke brand. Simple car work, one from Sears or radio shack would work fine. I think you could fund a number of decent ones to use for under $50.

Get one that is computer safe. Most of the newer digital ones are but make sure and for automotive use one that can read amp draw and is fused helps.

To be "computer safe", the meter must have 10 mega-ohms impedance - this prevents it from drawing too much current and frying the ECM/PCM. These will cost more, but the safety factor is worth it. You can probably also get excellent-quality meter online from Snap-on, Matco, and MAC. Actron also has a variety of meters for the advanced DIYer - see their website, and figure out which functions you may need. Then compare to the others. Good luck!
