I have an '84 cherokee with a 2.8 v6 that is blown up. I am wondering if I should bother rebuilding the engine, putting a remanufactured engine in or, can I change it out for an inline 6/ or is it possible to put a v8 in it? I appriciate the help.

It's always possible to do an engine swap, do a search here on the forum and you'll find several threads.
BUT... swaps are work intensive so if you're happy with the 2.8, then a rebuild is a good option (and likely cheaper, too)

I had an 84 with the GM 2.8. I researched it and the 4.0L will not fit, they had to modify the body, etc. . I rebuilt it once, still lacked power, but it lasted another 45k for a cost of a thousand bucks.
However, I traded it in for my 97 4.0L(new) and it has a lot more power and is better in many ways that 84 cannot be. I still have the 97 and it has 131k on it now.
So, probably for the same or less money, you can get a later model with the 4L used.

Isnt there a 3.1 or 3.4 GM V6 thats a direct swap for the 2.8? Seems like I read that a long time ago someplace. Try doing a couple internet searches, you may stumble onto something.

the 3.4 out of a 96 camaro will bolt right into where the 2.8 came out. u will just need to change intakes so u still have your carb setup on the 3.4. otherwise it bolts right in
