Timing Chain FixDyno247365 05-31-2006, 11:00 PM since I've bought the car, the timing chain has been knocking on the head. I've been told I need to replace both the upper timing chain, the lower one and tensioner. Is this right? Could you tell me what the tensioner is and why the lower timing chain needs to be replaced as well? Thanks as always AF nissan_240sx 05-31-2006, 11:07 PM The tensioner is there to prevent extra movement in the chain, hence the name tensioner. If you want to check it, remove the front cover and push on the tensioner it should go back and spring forward. Don't think you need to replace the bottom chain, but I'd do it while I'm in there. Dyno247365 05-31-2006, 11:25 PM For 2 timing chains and 2 tensioners, it's about 120 but there's a full kit to replace the whole system for 170. http://63.150.115.104/CommerceGateway/pictures/Nissan%20J-Pegs%5C1302853F11K.jpg Think I should get the 4 parts and save 50 or get the kit? Do I need all of those parts? nissan_240sx 06-01-2006, 01:05 AM Nah you don't really need the full kit. Dyno247365 06-03-2006, 05:34 AM Since I'm nearly done working on the Camaro, I get to work on the 240. I ordered the upper/lower chains and tensioners just as you suggested. Hopefully the head work goes smoothly. nissan_240sx 06-03-2006, 09:29 AM Yeah just take you're time and try not to lose any bolts lol It's easy, good luck! 89'SIL-40 06-03-2006, 10:52 AM I'd replace both chains and tensioners at the same time cause a week after doing one, if the other goes....You'll be pissed!lol http://i6.tinypic.com/11jcah3.jpg Dyno247365 06-03-2006, 04:19 PM I'd replace both chains and tensioners at the same time cause a week after doing one, if the other goes....You'll be pissed!lol http://i6.tinypic.com/11jcah3.jpg I just gotta make sure the Iroc-Z is street worthy before I take the 240sx out of commission.
