I have a 94 Taurus wagon 3.0 auto. The car quit while driving, Found the ten amp fuse to ignition coil blown. Replaced fuse, started up ok. When I put it in drive the fuse blows. In reverse it does not blow. Anyone have an idea.

How are your engine mounts? I once ran across a similar issue where a 2.5L 4-cylinder Taurus would die when put in gear. I don't recall if it did it in reverse as well. We found that when put in gear, the injector stopped getting signal. Tracing the injector wire (it was TBI injected) we found that when the transmission shop replaced the tranny, they pinched a wiring harness between the bell housing and the block. The wire bundle was repositioned, but not repaired. After a week or so of driving, the wires shifted enough that when the engine torqued when put in gear, two of the wires shorted out inside the bundle and caused the injector to lose pulse and the engine would die.

Moral of the long story: Check for damaged wires/wire insulation that may be shorting to ground when the engine shakes. If the engine mounts are shot, replace them (after fixing the damaged wires).

Rod, Thanks for the info. I have'nt got into it much yet. But I will check the mounts, and wiring. Is it possible a switch or wiring in the trans could be shorting out. I'm going to unhook the bulkhead connector from the trans, and see if the fuse still blows.this is just an oddball problem. Thanks, Wayne

It appears that 10-amp fuse also supplies current for the Constant Control Relay Module (CCRM), the Ignition Control Module, and the distributor (if your car is not distributorless ignition), and the radio noise capacitor. You may want to inspect those items as well.

Thanks Rod for the help. Found a bare wire for the coil against the top of the front trans pan. When I put it in drive ,the engine moved enough for the wire to touch the pan and blow the fuse. Thanks again
