There are different methods of working with Airbag lights ranging from "Try this" to "Take it in to a pro shop" because of age, revisions getting more complex and dedicated body modules that also comprise the SIR system used in GM trucks.

Also a air bag light on means you have a code set.
You will need a SIR system capable scanner to get the code to help find the problem.
And no Auto zone does not do air bag codes.
Air bags can save your life or kill you in a split second.
So if you are not SIR repair capable it would be safer to let someone that is do it.
A good factory repair manual or a All data sub would be a lot of help to you on it.

You need to get the sir codes read. The code should point you to the problem.

Take it to a dealer or shop which has the scanner to find out the code.

Don't mess with the Airbag or you could face damage or even death if it goes off in your face.

96 and later SIR systems come with a fault storage and profiling system that is very delicate and is beyond the realm of most home users to service. It is a facinating subject though, and googling up GM 96 and later SIR modules will reveal a dizzying amount of information. WHen a 96 and later unit lights the airbag dash light, you MUST have it diagnosed by a shop, the series of modules and one-way FLASH memory on these cannot be serviced or replaced in the field or by the consumer.
