Yes, it is an economy car but they are popular. Most adults that I know drive them have very little problems at all. My friend has an '02 with about 90k miles and hasn't had to do anything to it. Now, some of the older ones like '97 was prone to intake problems but for the most part, they are decent cars. das2123 05-24-2006, 09:00 AM Now, some of the older ones like '97 was prone to intake problems but for the most part, they are decent cars. What intake problems? americanbulldog, the neon can be a very reliable car. The ATX transmission is considered bulletproof if the correct fluid is used. When looking for one, try getting one with low miles and not modded. If looking for a first gen neon (95-99) check to see that is has a MLS HG (multi-layered steel headgasket) and also the 95-99 neons have a 100,000 mile timing belt. So if the car is over or approaching that mark, ask to see if the belt, water pump, and tensioner pulley have been replaced. I don't have much info on the second gen (2000+ neons). ponchonutty 05-24-2006, 10:35 AM das, some of them were prone to leak. It's nothing major but just a problem that can happen. It's simular to the Grand Am problems. HPNOTIQracing 05-25-2006, 08:21 AM das, some of them were prone to leak. It's nothing major but just a problem that can happen. It's simular to the Grand Am problems. you sir are the one and only person/source that i have ever heard that from. and intake? as far as? mani or air piping? ive owned many and known many more and have never seen or heard of this. das2123 05-25-2006, 12:00 PM das, some of them were prone to leak. It's nothing major but just a problem that can happen.I have yet to see or hear that from anyone. I know about the HG leak and oil leaks, but not the intake. Leaking what? ponchonutty 05-25-2006, 01:50 PM Pay attention to the coolant levels. They leak into the cyl. and the car will burn it off. It's a very small leak and is hard to diagnose. SRT-Wannabe 05-25-2006, 04:55 PM those type of leaks are usually from a bad hose. HPNOTIQracing 05-25-2006, 07:27 PM Pay attention to the coolant levels. They leak into the cyl. and the car will burn it off. It's a very small leak and is hard to diagnose. what is he talkin about? first hes talking about intake leaks, we ask him about it...... he goes to a different suppossed issue. flatlander757 05-25-2006, 08:56 PM what is he talkin about? first hes talking about intake leaks, we ask him about it...... he goes to a different suppossed issue. I think he's trying to say it leaks coolant into the cylinder(slowly) where it burns off, not out and onto the ground like most cars would. FemaleRacer 05-26-2006, 05:04 AM I've never had any intake issues with my 98, but I did have to replace the HG due to leaking oil. americanbulldog 05-26-2006, 05:38 AM are the neons good to hook up.and if so what ones like year range.let me know athe best yers to hook up, das2123 05-26-2006, 06:27 PM are the neons good to hook up.and if so what ones like year range.let me know athe best yers to hook up,Yes, and personally I'd say go with a 97-99 neon. All their parts and sensors are interchangable. The 95's and 96's have some things that are different about them. FemaleRacer 05-26-2006, 10:01 PM Yes, and personally I'd say go with a 97-99 neon. All their parts and sensors are interchangable. The 95's and 96's have some things that are different about them. I completely agree (and I researched this a lot before deciding on what year I bought) 97-99 is your best bet. satinkatie 05-27-2006, 07:25 PM I loved my Neon until it turned 100,000 miles. Not knowing about the timing belt, it broke and I need an engine I am told. 1998 Neon Espresso. I had just had a tune up ( $300+). So it's a great car if you do your homework. I was depending too much on my mechanic. das2123 05-28-2006, 07:12 PM Not knowing about the timing belt, it broke and I need an engine I am told.No you don't. Just a new head (junkyard) and some new valves, water pump, tensioner pulley and timing belt. diver4ever 09-25-2006, 03:12 PM whats up every 1. i was wondering how reliable the neons are like the years ranging from like 97-2002.in those years.and what are known problems.i dont want the srt i want to hook it up myself,so what years are good to hook up and that are reliable I bought my 98 Neon by the original ownetr about 4years ago w/98,00miles on it. I was depending too much on my mechanic. Hey satinkatie, If you live in San Jose, I know a great mechanic. I usually don't do mechanics because I do the work myself. However, his prices are great! My boyfriend took me to him to fix my Trani gasket. Only charged me $240.00. I thought it would be about 700.00 or more. Shop name is DUKE Automotive in San jose 408-993-8672. Honest guy das2123 09-25-2006, 03:30 PM I usually don't do mechanics because I do the work myself. However, his prices are great! My boyfriend took me to him to fix my Trani gasket. Only charged me $240.00.Wow...$240 for one hour labor at the most and $20 gasket kit!!!! Might not be so honest after all. diver4ever 09-25-2006, 03:54 PM Well, more to it. I'm sure it was the gasket. He had to take the entire trani off. At first I thought it was my oil pan gasket. I replace that, but it still was leaking oil. So, Trani had to come off. Let me know, to little money or to much to take trani off to replace a part? skatendestroy 09-25-2006, 06:40 PM trannie gasket are you talking about the gasket on the bottom of the transmission pan? or the rear main seal on the motor.? diver4ever 09-25-2006, 08:05 PM trannie gasket are you talking about the gasket on the bottom of the transmission pan? or the rear main seal on the motor.? The rear main seal on the motor. Hey, just got my car back from the shop. He told me to pick it up. He didn't fix it because I can do myself and save money. Told me I had to change out the positve cable wire. By looking at, It doesn't look bad. But on the other hand I can't really see to much of it because it has a tube and electrical tape covering. Hope this solves the problem.:grinyes: yale329 09-26-2006, 01:52 PM Female Racer, at age 54 you look great to me, mind you, I'm partially def and my wife looks great after 34 years of marriage.. Yes you are right. My family has had neons, being poor since 95. I would however also make sure the head gasket was changed, and timing belt before I were to purchase one.. A car is how you treat it Just a Dad Wayne zeph 10-17-2006, 03:48 PM I have a badly treated neon (brother locked up engine after driving it w/out checking oil). I replaced the engine and am looking forward to many returns from it. Be ggod to your neon and it will be good to you. The 3 spd tranny in the first generation are bullet proof! the 4 speed found in the newer ones are the same as a grand caravan and they suck! I work at AAMCO I should know, they keep food on my table.!!
