98 Rodeo will not idle??pgumby68 05-23-2006, 01:35 PM This happens now and then. When it happens I can immediately restart it, but it will shut off again if I don't keep the accelerator pressed. It will happen pulling up to red lights etc. Then the problem goes away. It lasts for hours sometimes, sometimes only a few minutes. Any ideas? amigo-2k 05-23-2006, 01:50 PM Clean your intake butterfly, check for codes, change the fuel filter (may be its plugged). and then check of a leaky intake manifold gasket. hows to's for all of the above are located in the FAQ's. Slade901 05-24-2006, 11:48 AM Make sure you check your vacuum hoses and make sure none of them is leaking. I've issues with my other vehicle with idle issues which "make it" intermittent. Come to find out that one of my vacuum hose was laying on the egr pipe and slowly burned in. What happens is that the egr pipe is somehow "barely" sealing the burned vacuum hose because the vacuum hose itself was laying on the egr pipe. When the car moves or at idle where the engine moves then the vacuum hose is not laying properly on the egr pipe and then the vacuum leaks rapidly. As you speed up then the engine does not move back and forth that much and then the engine does not require much vacuum the your engine is not at idle anymore and you don't experience rough running that much but your mileage suffers along the way. It could also be junk in the power steering pump (I think the FAQ's state that you can unplug a switch on the pump that turns of the increase idle when the wheel is fully cranked to one side). johnsm 05-24-2006, 07:03 PM Your check engine light should come on. Have the codes read. If it comes out Po171, it means engine running lean. This is caused by having extra air entering your intake manifolds. Check the remedies stated above. By purchasing a code reader you will avoid alot of stress John ArSargE7 05-29-2006, 03:25 PM On my 98 when it starts doing what you have describe it's to change the leaky intake manifold gaskets. So far I have had mine changed 3 times. The engine has 140K + miles on it. pgumby68 05-30-2006, 01:04 PM Here's the latest. A friend of a neighbor told me to turn the ignition on and off several times and it will "reset the computer". I'm not sure what it is actually doing, but when the Rodeo acts up I can do this and it will clear up. Does anyone have any ideas what is actually happening? pgumby68 06-04-2006, 08:57 PM bump vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
