Hey! This is kind of a 2 step question. The car jerks when shifting from first to second gear. It doesnt do it when the engine is warm, or if I "baby" the gas pedal.

Here it the history on the car. The family has owned the car since new in 1998. The transmision fluid was flushed once. I flushed the coolant system this winter and replaced the fluid. 140k miles, most are highway.

To try and fix the problem I changed the AX4N transmision fluid and filter. When the fluid was out, it was a brown color, and the magnet at the bottom of the pan was surrounded with metal shavings. Drove the car for 5 days, and it has not fixed the problem.

So, is it something I can fix, should I rebuild the transmission, or should I buy a new car?

Thanks for the help.

Hi, Any error codes? Does the trans perform OK otherwise? The magnet is there to do just what you describe, These (all) automatic and manual transmissions produce metal, the magnet is there so these small particles do not contaminate the rest of the transmission. I will look up my old TSB's to see if I can help. Plrase answer my 2 questions so I have enough info to go by...See Ya, Clay..

Hi, Thanks for you feed back, I can find only one TSB pertaining to your symptom, TSB 97-25-5, It relates to a recalibration of the PCM, Which I was going to suggest if I could not find any related TSB's, This has to be done by FORD at the dealer with a WDS scanner,,,,Should solve the problem,,,,GOOD LUCK.....Clay....

Don't know what price you got for a transmission fix but have you looked at the cars on the market selling for that price?
