I have gotten lots of good info on about my GMC, (givin some too) but I could really use some expert knowledge about a fuel pump on my wifes 98 astro, it's a gm so I figure it is close enough, like all the rest of late model GM's it's in the tank, supposed to run at 60 psi.
The pump was siezed I guess, so I pulled the tank/pump, put power to the pump on a bench test and nothing, smacked it (not too hard) and it jumped to life, I pulsed power to it at least 50 times, worked every time, ran it solid for 1 min 30 sec and the pump started getting warm and I could hear a slight variation in the hum, but I dont figure this was a good test since these things need to run in liquid for cooling.
Would this pump still be good? why would it stop and then seem to run fine after a bump.
The reason I ask is these things run about $400.00, if it were a $50.00 or even a $100.00 part there would be no question, but at 400 bucks I would really like some expert advice before I junk the old pump.
Appreciate any input.

dose your wife run the gas on less then 1/4 most of the time?
it could be from years of almost over heating.
it just tolk that one time and it cought in the housing
i would just replace it.
it is as expencive as a tow bill and you taking off work to help.
that alone has to cost four hundred.
why would you wond your wife to site on the side of the road for hours
in my mind i think that four hundred is well worth it
if it were my truck thats fine but not my wifes!!!
good luck

Thanks for the input, I did replace the pump 2 weeks ago after all, but I bought this thing with a bad pump, so I really had no history on it, "except I fired it up with starting fluid" and now it is running perfectly,
I paid $ 300.00, for it, found a pump on craigslist for $200.00 and replaced the fuel filter for $10.00, done!
exterior is perfect not a dent in it, tires are almost new, interior is perfect not a rip, all power options work perfectly, trans has been replaced by dealer 10k ago at 70k it now has 80k, dealer invoice in the van, brakes 8k ago, again dealer invoice.
I have never had a luckier auto find in my life, now the family has a roomy vehical to drive places in, no more being cramped into a corolla, or loading the camper on my gas gulpping truck just for a daytrip to the mountains.
I have to say that I'm very supprised by the performance of the 4.3 vortec engine, wow!! very peppy little motor, output spec's are very similar to what
my "stock" 91 5.7 GMC spec's were, according to what info I found on web sites, "190 hp".
anyways thanks for the input.

I have to say that craigslist is pretty cool, the guy I bought the pump from basicly did the same on his vehical, I found the van in there and the pump, now I'm looking at a couple of cheap hundred $ 4 banger cars I can drive for the summer while I put my 91 sierra up on blocks for a much needed rest and revamp, I have had a nice set of vortec heads ready to install for more than 3 years now, front end is getting a little sloppy and after letting the wife drive I need to get to some body work, argh!!
