Front End Clunkingjmak 05-05-2006, 02:44 PM I have a 2002 Nissan Xterra XE with a V6 and 4 wheel drive. I also have automatic hubs and the stock tire lift configuration. My problem is that my truck is making a clunking sound from the front end. It only happens when I make very sharp turns to the left. I am not in 4 wheel drive when this is happening. Past vehicles have made a similar sound when the cv axles are gone . The truck only has 25,000 miles . Anyone have a guess as to what is wrong or is this a normal sound? OffroadX 05-05-2006, 03:36 PM Unless your hubs aren't unlocking properly (or you're in 4WD), it shouldn't be the CVs. A common noise (clunk/grind/etc.) problem when making very tight turns (wheel cranked all the way) is metal-to-metal contact with the steering stops. Nothing a little grease (or replacing the worn-out plastic caps) can't fix. Try a glob of heavy grease (or Vaseline in a pinch) on them. There are 4 total, one each on the front and back of each lower control arm: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/xterra/tech/steeringstop.jpg jmak 05-09-2006, 10:27 AM You were right about the steering stop! the left one was gone. I ordered 3 to have a couple extra ones from xterraparts.com. Total was a 6 dollar fix. the dealership wanted $90.00 to look at it. Looks like I owe you one Offroad X. thanks a lot!!! vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
