My sportage wouldn't start so I tried jumping it and it wouldn't take the charge so I bought a new battery and it still won't start the accessories come on and it turns over but that is it. Could it be the alternator? If so does any one have info on how to replace it. I found great info on replacing my timing belt and fuel filter on this site.

a) IF you have a new battery and the starter cranks the engine but it does not start (fire up) , the alternator is no culprit.

b) IF you have a new battery and it the starter does not crank the engine (accessories may be ON initially but die as soon as you try to crank) then you have a poor connection , 12V or ground , most probably on battery cables, if not at the battery side, then at the other end...and the alternator is no culprit.

c) if you have a battery fully charged, it cranks the engine and it starts and runs but after a few runs or days you have no juice left, then you have a charging problem.

is your condition A or B or C ?

after connecting the battery everything is completely dead then after connecting the jumper cables and charging for a few minutes everything comes on and the engine turns over but does not completely catch. I'm not sure if it started at one point but once off it was completely dead again.

If with a fully charged battery (that is what you install don't you) you cannot crank and everything --everything , lights, heater, instrument panel, wipers --is dead, then check battery cables..at both ends ( starter connector, engine ground) and do not believe your eyes: corrosion on battery poles connectors can look as hard conductor but use a file and make them CLEAN...battery and connector (I understand the new battery poles are clean..) ..clean again and then tighten connectors ; if replacement universal connectors have been installed , unbolt the nuts that keep the cable on the connector, clean cable and connector and put everything back on tight.
THe quantity of batteries, starters and alternators that have been changed for dirty corroded connectors are worth a fortune and a half......
ONce this issue is cleared for sure, then looking elsewhere is permissible.
