removing front rotors on '95 F-150

I need a little help. I have a '95 F-150 4WD/automatic with automatic locking hubs.

I am replacing the front rotors and I removed the caliper with no problems. Then I removed the hub cover that was held on with three torx screws. That's when I encountered a problem. Under the hub cover there is a grey metal cap that has six slots around the perimeter. I cannot remove it. It has a small amount of spring tension as I can push in on it, but it won't turn in either direction. I assume that it is a locking device and that behind it is the bearing adjusting nut, but how do I remove it?

I went to a local parts store and they had a large socket (covering 1986-1995 F-150's) for removal of the bearing lock nut, however, it has only four internal tabs and it is too small in diameter to fit my hub.

What do I need to remove the hub locking nut so I can remove the rotor?

Sounds like they gave you the wrong hub nut socket.Or is it an engage gear?Can you spin it when you push it in?If it is then there should be a snap ring around the peremeter of the hub.That should give you access to the stub axel snap ring and all of the other stuff.Just out of curiosity are you using a tech manual or are you flying by the seat of your pants?

I made a mistake you do have the right hub nut socket but you need to pull the snap ring holding the locker in.Once you get the locker out it should be smooth sailing

Thanks for the reply Neon! Problem has been solved. There was a snap ring holding the cap in but at first I didn't see it. Nonetheless, it wasn't easy getting the snap ring out. I had to use a small bent tip pick to get under the edge of the ring to pull it out.

I got it out and you're right, after that it was smooth sailing.
