roll over check valve

Since my mechanic has found that my roll over check valve was stuck shut I wasn't getting any return to the tank from the fuel system. He assures me that I will only have some delayed starts and nothing to worry about. Any future concerns anyone can see. Should I just replace the fuel pump and have done with it? He took the check valve off so it will run right, that kind of scares me.
