Greetings,

I was going through K&N's website and acording to them, their intake system boosts performance numbers nicely on the V6 4Runner.

I was wondering if there are any of you out there that have this intake kit on their V6 and if so, what kind of numbers are you getting?

Many thanks,
Norm

Let me reiterate. The K&N site shows improvements in engine performance numbers, but they did not give any gas milage numbers. That is what I was wondering, if anyone has the kit and if they have shown any improvement in gas milage.

Regards.

Here's some unbiased numbers with dyno slips:

http://www.gadgetonline.com/AirInduction.htm#K&N%20Fuel%20Injection%20Performance%20Kit

"K&N released the Fuel Injection Performance Kit (FIPK) for the 3.4 and I ordered one from Performance Products. By this time I had the supercharger installed. I was surprised at the substantial increase in induction noise and I did not notice any increase in power.

I was told by the people at TRD (http://www.trdusa.com/) that they have tested the FIPK and they saw a reduction in power. I later ran my own dyno test and found this to in fact be true. You do have to admit, it does look faster, right??

The FIPK also cause damage to my 4Runner. The overall design of it does not allow enough give to allow for the movement of the engine in its mounts. The FIPK uses the same mounting points as the stock air box and I found that the FIPK had pulled the mounting bolt right through the fender mounting point, ripping and tearing the sheet metal. I do not recommend anyone install this set up in his or her vehicle. I had a reduction in power with my supercharger, and damage to my 4Runner as a result of installing the FIPK. I reinstalled my modified air box."

"My results showed that opening the front of the air box made the most power, followed extremely close by just removing the elbow. These two configurations and the completely stock box beat the FIPK.

Configuration & Results:*Note- runs with the stock air-box used a replacement drop in K&N filter and the stock AFM*Configuration 1st 2nd 3rd
Run 9 Stock Box - No Front 173.3 HP 205.5 HP 208.6 HP
Run 7 Stock Box 168.8 HP 199.5 HP 202.2 HP
Run 6 K&N FIPK 169.4 HP 202.3 HP 199.0 HP

This is the test that is sure to get some folks upset. Performance products is selling the K&N FIPK for $219. The K&N FIPK beats the stock box by .6 HP in 1st, 2.8 in 2nd, but looses to the stock box by 3.2 in 3rd for an average loss of .06 HP.

Now if you just cut open the front of the box you get 6.4 HP over the stock box for free or 9.6 over the K&N FIPK. Remember from the previous chart you will get basically the same results by removing the elbow as cutting open the box. I think this might be the way to go so you can pop it back in if you decide to go swimming."
All in all, it's not likely that you'll gain mileage with this set-up.

I had to replace the Air Flow Meter because of the oil in the "out of the box" K&N filter.
There was too much oil in the filter but by the time I heard it "sniffling" in the intake it was too late, the filter oil had gone everywhere.

Take a look at the designs. the Stock paper filter uses the entire cross-section of the filter box, where K&N has over half of it blocked of with the top cap!
I was very disappointed, for the Toyota V6 drop in they are just selling their name.

Now you guys and gals are going to laugh at this but hey it did wonders for my 94 toyota 4runner. I put in the K & N Air Filter , I just replaced the Toyota Stock air filter thats all, not the open air K & N air filter. And also just for the hell of it I put in that Tornado Turbo Air Control thing, I figured well I'll take it back when it doesn't work. Well I was Pleasantly surprised. I made those changes over 2 years ago and my runner is alot quicker idles alot better and it seems like it got better on gas. So I kept that Tornado Air Flow thing and The K & N Air Filter as a matter of fact all is fine, I'd even say Great. The Truck has Never Run As Good.
Now when you Stop laughing think about it...More Air to the intake Means
= More Power , plus better gas milage to boot. I'm Not saving a bundle but i Laugh Myself when I think about it . :)
Oh also I got a custom exhaust 2 1/4" from the Converter back along with the previous statements.
I Figured fast and More Air In, Needs To Be Exhausted faster, so thats why I changed the Exhaust and I'm More Than Happy with the Results.
Next Step is a Flow Master :)

Hmmmm what were the numbers before and after the air cleaner replacement?
How dirty was the old one? These filters need to be replace every 6 months at least. (if you drive it at all) and more frequently if you're in dirt.
To be correct, mileage should be taken with a NEW & CLEAN stock air filter. then again with the mods.

As I stated before K&N filter damaged components. I also have empirical data to prove that in the V6 application it does reduce air flow and performance.
I might suggest to you to leave the "vortex" add on and go back to a stock paper filter take your readings, even have the HP tested at various ranges.
You will be surprised.
