What is an slightly below fair condition 240z worth in the mid-west? I am currently in internet negotiations with a guy who lives about 200 miles away and is currently in possesion of a 240z which I would really like to own. The problem is that although his classified ad said he wanted $500 for it his price suddenly climbed to $2000. So how much is the car worth? It has typical rust in typical places as well as a bad right rear fender. The seats are torn and the dash is cracked and it has various dings and dents on the right front as well. I really only want to spend $500 considering that the motor didn't run when he bought the car but he got it to run and the missing parts including a mirror and carpet as well as the lack of exhaust. So what do you think should I stick to guns and try to get it for $500?

For a car in the condition you describes i wouldnt go beyond 1200 - 1500

hahah wow... sounds like a shit box.

I wouldn't pay over $800. Have you seen any pictures of it? I'd say go and take a look if you're really that interested in it. But go over it with a fine tooth comb.

Don't buy it if you feel it's going to be a money pit, which it sounds like it already is.... Don't feel pressured to buy it either, if you're having bad vibes about it when you're going over it, just simply decline the car and go home.

With older cars, it's sometimes worth the extra money to buy a car that not only runs, but doesn't look like it came out the south bound side of a north bound dog.

http://aviary.info/photos/index.php?dir=240z/ Here are some pictures of the car I found another Z that is in alot better shape and and is alot closer than the this one but I he won't answer his phone right now so I have no idea what he wan't for or even if it's for sale he's an old junker though so it won't be much.

that actually doesn't look too bad man.... the body is in pretty damn good shape... if you're looking for a bit of a project, that would definitely satisfy your taste....

just be careful of hidden rust underneath the car....

i think after a good cleaning, waxing and detailing the car could look pretty good!

I'm hoping that this other guy will sell me his 280z cheap because I just called this guy and he is standing firm at the $2000 price point, but if all else fails I will buy this one.

yeah 2k is too much... i'd say 1200 at the MOST... see if you can test drive it and take it to a body shop nearby to see if they can give you an estimate on how much it's going to cost to repair the crappy bondo/rust job..

OH MY GOD...

Skip that car... that's a total rust bucket. You'll spend more removing rust, cutting panels and welding in new metal than you would on anything else.

Do not buy that car, this guy is whack... has the nerve to charge extra for new exhaust when the whole damn car is fucked?

Fuck that guy, don't buy that car. I know 240z's... that car is not worth your time. If it was $500... maybe even then I'd still feel ripped off, but nothing more.

Keep searching.

Well thanks for the advice I will most definetely not be buying that car but I will continue looking for another 240/260/280z until I find one that is in decent shape. I found another one at a salvage yard but upon seeing the car and realizing it was folded in half from a wreck I think I'll skip that one too. Hopefully I can get a hold of the other guy soon. Thanks again for the advice I'm kind of clueless when it comes to Zs other than that I know that I must own one.

pfff it's just a little surface rust on.... everything on the underside.... it'd only take a week to get rid of :p

Well an update in the price point he said he'd sell it for $800 if I come and get it, what do you think?

haha... that's totally up to you... it's not worth it in my opinion. It's totally thrashed.

If you want a project that'll last you a few years restoring it to 'decent' condition... then sure. But... it's not going to be something you enjoy driving for a while.

Well I'm buying it for $700 which is finally a workable figure for my budget, thanks for all the advice anf who knows maybe this rust bucket will rise from the ashes like the Devil Z.

ugh man, please don't do it to urself... look I was desperate for a z, and I found mine, but I'm realy wishing I'd waited, becuase I've found much better ones, and this sucker's been nothing but a huge ass headache, guarenteed that I love it to death, but I really should have weighted my options.

Now that I've got it home and had a chance to go over it, it's not in terribly bad shape, their are a few holes that need patching and the paint is rough in a few spots, but the floors have been replaced with stainless sheet metal and mesh. The motor runs and hits on all 6, the transmission works, the valves need adjusting, but it starts every time on command and I really don't think I got a bad deal. For $700 you can't ask for much more overall I'm glad I bought it.
