Heat Shields on Spark Plug Wires ?

I gotta question. What are the heat shields on the spark plug wire boots and what do they look like and how do I get them off ?

3.4 L or 3.8 L ? what year ?
I have a 3.4 L , I do not recall any. If you have a 3.4 L I will look in the factory manual.
