Exhaust Cut-Out

I was surfing the internet one day and i found some guy that had put an exhaust cut-out on his 93 integra GSR and said he saw a HP increase of 17 with only that mod. i looked up the prices and how they work and what not and, as far as i can tell, it would be the equivilent of adding a high performance exhaust system at 1/25 of the price.

This seems almost too good to be true, and i was wondering if anyone could tell me if it would be worth the investment to put it in and also if it would pass emissions tests in California

if i undestand correctly what a cut out is then no, you would by no means meet cali emmisions when you had the unit opened up.
i assume what you are looking at is something that you place in your exhaust and when you want you can unbolt the plate from it and bypass all exhaust piping. sure, it will help had some hp but it won't be very fun to drive around

you DO realise that putting in a cut out will make you're car sound like a hunk of shit. where are you thinkin of putting the cut out?

ditto, ditto, and no you would not get a 17 hp gain from simply doing that.

I was thinking of putting it between the cat and the headers, and then getting it with the control cable so that it can be operated from inside the car. I saw one at JC Whitney's website for $30 (cant remember exactly). That way i could drive around with it closed and then open it up only when i need a boost in power. But if its not worth the investment... ill put my money elsewhere.

stay away from that trash, it certainly is not legal on streets and more than anything, ur car would run worse with it on, save up for a real exhaust system.

if you put the system between the cat and the headers then you will get a performance increase, because you are basically taking out the cat and some of the pipework, making the gases flow more freely, and depending on you're engine it could be quite a good one. The way you describe doing it with the control cable could be quite a good idea, but as i arent from California i wouldnt no how well the cops would take it

Any gain will be minimal; It wont be anywhere near 17 horsepower. Save up for a real exhaust that is carb exempt.

actually, the gain could be quite good, depending on the engine. if its a high power engine it could be more than 17hp, but i guess as its an integra hes talkin about ur prob rite,. it wont be too much different

a much cheaper method would be stickin a nail through ur exhaust;) :D

If he had an extremely high performace car, then maybe he would get a nice gain. But he is talking about his 91 Integra RS. Again, you wont recieve anywhere near 17 horsepower from that mod. Don't waste your time.

wot r the stats on a US Integra??? being from the UK we only ever get the Integra Type R's

Pretty minimal for the numbers on a US '91 integra. 130HP, 121 ft/lbs torque, 2400 lbs curb wieght.

Except for the lightwieght part, this car is really lacking in performance from a stock point of view. Although i have been able to get a 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds which i thought was pretty damn good considering the stats.

7.5 seconds?? That seems pretty quick for a stock 91 RS. how did you get it timed?

i know this probably isnt the best way to do it, but i just had my buddy sit in the passenger seat with a stop watch starting when he heard the wheels start to peel out and ending when he saw the speedometer hit 60. Just to be sure he ended at the right time, i would also be looking at the speedometer and call out when it hit 60 (that way he would be sure he it wasnt off by looking at it from too far of an angle)... We did it 3 times and each time we came out with 7.5 seconds. Then as a little cushion, we figured that if he was a little slow with his reaction time to start, it would be made up considering there was an extra 200 pounds in the car (150 for the friend and another 50 for the subs, box, and amp in my trunk)

I wish i could get it professionally done just so i could be sure... but we only did it cuz we were bored one night and were trying to find something to do.
