can the 4 wheel drive option be used for noral road use? or will this have a detriental effect on the 4 x 4 system?

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!
It should only be use off road or wet slippery roads. The reason is the Front diff is not LSD (both spin at the same time) hence you would put exxseeive strain on the joints and the 4wd box. I have seen cv joints damaged cause of this.
