97 PI electrical question

I promise soon I'll stop bugging you guys with this car. This car has an ABS light on and I inspected the fuse panel under the hood (behind battery) and noticed the giant ABS fuse was not present. When I compared this with my other 97 I quickly realized that it should probably be there. After installing a 50 fuse, the car started beeping at me in intervals of 5 beeps. And the battery light now stays on after the car is off and the key is removed. When I remove the 50 fuse, the battery light on the dash shuts off. I tried disconnecting the battery for about an hour & same issue. Someone want to take a stab at diagnosing this one for me or making a suggestion? Thank you

Try removing the plug from the ABS unit under the hood, put the fuse back in and see iof you get the same beeping. If you do sounds like a wiring harness problem, causing some other device in the car to put out that error beep.

I'll try it. W2O (not to be confused with H20), any suggestions?

That sounds like the seat belt warning beeps. Does any warning lights come on the dash when it beeps, or just the battery light with the beeps? Is this an ex-police? If so, more than likely they have cut a wire when removing some police equipment. If not, make sure the ground to the dash panel is good. Check all the bulbs in the instrument cluster to be sure none is blown and not giving the warning light with the beeps. Also check the wires coming from regulator to be sure they are not shorted together. Does the alternator still charge when the light is on? It is hard to understand why the ABS fuse causes this, unless there is corrosion or a broken wire under the fuse box. Might be worth a look. Keep us informed on the progress and I will keep searching.

it's an ex Mass SP unit, the battery light comes on when you place the 50 fuse in the ABS slot and it beeps in intervals of 5 and it sounds like it's coming from under the glove compartment area. It's pretty loud but only lasts for about 20 seconds. When you take it out, the battery light shuts off. The only other lights on the dash are the ABS & airbag lights. I'll try looking for corrosion under that fuse panel but it looks pretty clean from the side view. Alternator was bad when I got the car a couple weeks ago. It only has 70k & runs really strong which makes this a bit confusing. I'll check it out some more but I might end up swinging it by the dealer (gulp). I appreciate your help.

Let me check some more this weekend. I will look at wiring to see if there is anything in common on these circuits.

Checked the instrument cluster wiring and the ABS wiring and there is not any place the 2 systems share a common connection. The printed circuit board behind the instrument cluster may be faulty. Not sure. Does the alternator charge properly when the light is on? The charge light is on a separate circuit from anything else. The ABS light is connected to the other warning indicators. There is a 350 ohm resistor around the charging light that could be blown also. Just shootig in the dark here. Wish I hd a definate answer for you. It is just going to be time consuming to chase the wiring down to find it. Good luck and if I can help, ask away.

today I cleaned the ground from the fuse box under the hood, pulled the actual fuse box out and inspected thoroughly (no corrosion at all), cleaned the power connection to the side of the fuse box, checked with a test light all the connections to the fuse box and installed a new positive terminal to the battery. I even tried unplugging the connection for the actual abs unit and inspected and still when I install the 50 fuse and turn off the car, the red battery light comes on the dash which i assume means there is a draw coming from somewhere once that fuse is installed. Let me know if there are any other suggestions before I have a dealer look at it, this one stumps me a bit. Thank you

I like your idea about the printed circuit board on the cluster W2O. I visited 3 junk yards this past weekend and the best I could find was a 97 grnd marquis (which I grabbed the fuel gauge from). My question on the circuit board is that on the back of my PI circuit board, the color is red and on the back of the GM it was green. Will that make any type of difference if i try it out? thank you

Not really sure about the color. I believe as long as it has all the same cluster package, that is all the same warning devices andlights in the same place, it should work. Not exactly sure on it though. It may just be something Ford does to differentiate between the PI and GM.

I did a little more trouble shooting and found that the source of the beeping is the a silver box under the dash on the passenger side rt side wall. The box has 2 plastic wiring connectors that go into it and a yellow wire has been spliced into and the it routes into the fender wall area and is gone and I don't see it comes back out under the hood area. I have a Ford mechanic friend who says he'll look at it sometime next weeek but if anyone has run into something involving this box, the red battery dash light and the 50 amp abs fuse, I am all ears. thank you
