Noticing that the front signal needing to be replaced, didn't see an easy way to remove and insert the new bulb. Is there a trick to this, or do I need a special tool to get at it from the back?

No trick. To change lamps you need to remove the complete headlamp assembly or remove enough to pull forward. There are two L-shaped pull retainers on the back. Grab a hold of one and pull up. Remember there are two. Once done the lamp can be accessed for replacement. The socket holder will twist to get lamp out.
