Hello all,

I have a coolant leak that I have isolated to just behind plastic square shapped flange that the upper coolant hose connects to. I have read through some threads and it seems that this is a common problem with these vehicles. I am not an expert on the subject. The leak is a pretty constant flow and only leaks when the vehicle reaches normal operating temperature and when it is revved. It can be seen from the drivers side behind the flange that the hose connects to and is right next to the engine. It leaks (flows) out towards the firewall. Does this sound like the thermostat housing? If so what parts do I need to fix it. I just dropped $350 for a serp belt, tensioner, and a few other things so I am going to try to do this myself due to shortage of funds at the present time. How much is this going to run me in parts? Does anyone have any pictures they could send me so I can verify the exact location of the leak to confirm the culprit. I do not have much knowledge of these cars. Also how can I tell which motor I have. It is a 1995 VR6 passat...but B3 or B4? I don't know what this means. How can I tell which it is when ordering the part? Thanks in advance. Brad

OK I had a what sounds like the same problem. If it is leaking out of a (probably plastic) pipe that is called the water distribution pipe. It's a dealer part and I tried to do it myself only to have it taken to the dealer 4 days later. It cost about $300 total. If that is the problem check your water pump after for any leaks -k-
Hope this helps.
