Another Crankshaft Position Sensor Question

Guys, I'm really confused here. I have gotten to the point where I'm going back to the original source of my ONLY electrical problem I've ever had with this Jeep. My CPS.

Long story short, the old one failed in the traditional sense (dying while driving and the occasional "no start"). Since then, those problems have been corrected, but I've had random misfires and been throwing other parts at it.

By the way, I have a 1996 4WD JGC 4.0 V6.....110K. I do not know exactly what type of tranny I have. Maybe someone can help with that as well.

For all I have read in my Haynes Manual and been able to find out, my CPS is supposed to be a butterfly type with 2 bolts on each side. If I look down on top of the transmission bellhousing on the driver's side and trace the pigtail back, it looks nothing like this and has some kind of white-ish metal or tough material "hood" over the top of it. I can barely get my hand past the tranny dipstick and feel around back there, but it feels nothng like what it is supposed to be and seems to be only mounted with (1) bolt.

From the best I can see, it looks like it a small black block bolted to the tranny. But again, most of it is sheilded by the "hood" and another wrapped cable of some kind linked close to it that doesn't allow me a good look at all. It looks NOTHING like the diagram on P.6-17 of my Haynes Manual.

Can anyone tell me if my repair shop could have possibly installed the WRONG CPS? Can that actually be done?

I'm almost certain at this point that I will have to get a shop to change it for me, but I'm looking for some help anyway here. No way I can get to the bolt(s) from what I can tell, from above or below. I don't know how anyone did this without dropping the transmission.

I wish I could post pictures, but it won't let me. Maybe that would help.

But, if anyone has any ideas, I'm all ears...

Thanks.

Bryan

Dale,

That was great, really helped. The bad part is that I still cannot see it very well to compare the pictures, but it at least leans against the "butterfly type.

It doesn't really matter at this point. I'm going to have to get the CPS changed again just to see if that is the problem. It's really pointless to go in any other direction at this point given the history.

The bottom line is that I have had no trouble with this Jeep until I had my mechanic fix the original CPS that was bad. I also had him replace the plugs and wires at the time as well, but they have been ruled out and replaced with Champion plugs and MOPAR wires since then.

Just GOTTA be an "iffy" replacement CPS unless the computer has gotten hosed up somewhere along the way. REALLY hope that is not the case...

Thank you for the help.

OK first of all it's a CKP sensor for proper acronym. The cam position sensor is CMP. Also you have an inline 6 not a V6. The ckp is located here...

You would have a 42re.

do u know what rand th cps was..

i would use a mopar brand cps this that way u know your getting a good quality part..

also, some of the cps on the 4.0l engines use a paper spacer that eeds to be reused and they might not of put it on or it could have fell behind the engine and they never seen it.

No...I don't know what it was because I had a local shop (where I normally get the work done that I cannot do) do the work. So, I have no idea what they used. I am going to call them tomorrow though just to check in case I do find that the part is bad, I'll return it myself.

I do know a mechanic at the local Jeep Dealer though and I can probably at least get him to check it out for me before I change it. In addition, I will be getting a MOPAR CPS when I likely change it out.

Like I said, it all goes back to the CPS and the trends of my mult cyl misfires and they have been seen by quite a few others with intermittment CPS's among other bad parts.

Like I said, I've "tuned" up and replaced all of the other things that should and need to be done that would have been causing this. Unless there is a coincidence with another problem occurred at the exact same time my original CPS failed in December (no start), I'm pretty confident now that it is the culprit.

I have a 93 JGC limited....pulled the CPS today and it is the butterfly (two bolt) short magnet sensor with the oval plug. Before I took it off I went to Autozone and purchased a CPS made by(Wells), they gave me the single bolt bracketed longer magnet sensor with the oval plug. There is no way that this sensor can be bolted on and clear the flywheel. Anyone have this same problem...and more importantly, find the fix to this problem?? Thanks much, Ray

nevermind....answered my own question. I returned the wrong cps today and brought iN my bad one. A more knowledgeable clerk helped me out and found out that my jeep is an early 93, so he brought up the 92, and kazaamo -WE FOUND A MATCH!!- was about $72.00.

Yup they used the AW4 transmission until mid 93 after that the 42re.
