engine codes

Does anyone know how to get the codes without using a scanner i know on the old fords you can use the jump wire but mine is the new style 1993 escort gt 1.8l. The check engine light will stay on for about 1 or 2 minutes after first started i just repalced the oxygen sensor pulled the negitive off the battery for 5 minutes check engine light still comes on.

Look here for a way to use a jumper wire... you can either watch the codes flash out on the dash or with a voltmeter as in the diagram.
