I think your problem is the 4.8L mated to 3.23 gears. Thats a lot of truck for that small engine to pull around compounded by that high gear ratio. Your engine is probably working double duty moving your truck around and operating well below its efficiency rpm range. I was told when I bought mine by the dealer sales people that I would do best with the 5.3L and 4.10 gears both in power and fuel economy. I'm glad I listened to them.

What about if I put 3.73 pos. trac in it ? Would that help much ?

Keep in mind, every MPG difference for me makes about $270/yr difference. So, if I could get another 2MPG over 4 years, that would be about $2160.00 (ish)

That's what I'm not sure of. Maybe I'll call a dealer and see how much it would cost tomorrow. Not only that, but how long do I plan to own this truck...

seems expensive. u talkin about having a dealership do it? I just got a whole new rear put in, Eaton posi, new gears, everything. only cost $1,200 from a shop.

I get 17.5 highway, '99 4.8, 4x4 EC, 4:10 gears and 285 tires.

I get about 18.5-19mpg. I have a 5.3 E/C and 3.73 gears.
