Distributor Question...

Call me an idiot for i have been called far worst but can someone explain to me what the "vacuum advance" on the distributor does? i belive thats what it is called i have no idea what it does all i do is make sure its pluged in.. all these years i have been learning the wrong things ahhh lol ... .:banghead:
