The power to my steering wheel seems to have gone dead. The horn and the cruise control switches on the steering wheel quit working. The dealer said maybe a bad wire in left front wheelwell. They would have to remove wheel and then remove the fender liner to get at wires. Anybody run into this?

The ground to activate the horn appears to be through the speed control module, and coincidently the "On" switch for the cruise won't get power if the relay for the horn is not powered or if the coil is bad. Battery voltage is applied to one side of the relay coil for the horn, and the other side of the coil is connected to the speed control "On" switch. This way, when the speed control is on, if the horn button is depressed, grounding the circuit, the speed control will turn off.

So, I would suggest you confirm that there is power to the dark green/orange wire of the horn relay. If not, trace the wire to find the problem. If there is, then remove the relay from the socket and check for continuity to ground of the dark blue wire when the horn button is pressed and when the "Off" button for the speed control is pressed. If you don't get continuity to ground, then you may have a bad clock spring, connector, wire, both switches, or speed control module.

It appears the horn relay is what the shop was referring to when they said they'd have to pull the fender well. The relay is mounted in that area.

Thanks for the reply. Those are good ideas to start with. I know the clock spring was mentioned also. In the power distrbution block under the hood there is a 1/2 ISO horn relay. I believe that is the one you refer to. I will be doing some testing with my meter.

The horn relay in the distr. block under the hood is probably the same one. From the diagram in my service manual, it's hard to determine where exactly it's located and where the wires enter the block from. The wires may come in from underneath and that may be why the shop mentioned removing the inner fender liner.

I have a 97' Sable Wagon and it had the same problem and my reverse lights didnt work, the problem was that there is a harness that goes into your tailgate door through the body with a rubber boot around it, and from opening and closing the door (not too much) the wires in the harness broke, if i can remember correctly my wire was pink, i just got a new piece of wire and attached it so it had some more slack and everything seems to be working fine now. the boot is on the left hand side on the top of the tailgate you will see it when the door is open jsut pull it back and inspect the wires
