My fuel gauge is acting funny. It will register half a tank then move to full tank. We can be idling at a red light and it will register more and more fuel as we sit. We filled up a couple of days ago and it is still rigistering a full tank. Does anyone have any idea what is wrong? Please help.

Common problem on a Regal. Your fuel level sending unit and float is acting up. It is located in the fuel tank as part of the fuel pump assembly.

Is it hard to fix? Can I do it myself or do I need to take it to the dealer?

No it can be done DIY. I did mine and saved a bunch. The level sensor can be purchased separately without having to buy the complete fuel pump assembly. Expensive around $90 but cheaper than $300 for the complete fuel pump assembly.

Behind the rear passenger side seat in the center of the trunk is an access cover that can be removed. Just peel away the sound deadening material. Once access cover bolts are removed the cover will come off and expose the top part of the fuel pump assembly. You have to disconnect the electrical connectors and carefully disconnect the fuel/evaporative emissions lines. Before doing this mark all connectors and lines so you get them back in the right place during assembly. A big c-clip retainer must be removed next. After that fuel pump assembly will remove by lifting up and snaking it out. The level and float will be located at the bottom. Then you can replace the sensor and level. Also, there will be a big o-ring seal. Make sure it is good and not damaged. Replace if necessary. Here is a pic of the complete fuel pump assembly.
