When you are buying wheels, what does the offset mean and does it matter?

The offset is the distance in millimetres from the centre line of the wheel and the mounting surface of the rim/wheel.
If it is to big the wheel will stick outside the guard and can rub.
If it is to big the wheel will stick outside the guard and can rub.
