What exhaust can I get to get the loudest meanest sound out of my truck. I want to put smoke stacks on it also so how would I go about doin this setup. Willing to go with no muffler.
Thanks

You won't get any shop to give you an exhaust with no muffler or cat. They face a $10,000 fine if they do. If you live in a state that has emmision testing it won't pass either. I hear of alot of people going with a cat-back system with an H pipe and dualled. I personally don't like the H, but that's my opinion. Put that behind headers. Don't go straight pipes or stacks, just because it's loud does not make it sound good.

Putting smoke stacks on a gasser...bad idea. The idea of SMOKE stacks is to be able to produce the smoke IE diesel. If you want loud go with some longtubes headers, no cat/muffler, just straight pipes out the back. Although if you have emissions you will fail. It is possible to find a shop to remove the cat for you. Any shop will remove a muffler, no fine for taking that off.

You'll see vapor trails if it's cold out. Stacks are cool.

And yeah, just because it's loud doesn't necessarily mean it sounds good.

Aright so I think im gonna go with getting an aftermarket cat-back exhaust and leaving off the muffler. Who makes a nice loud/mean sounding exhaust that will fit my needs?

If u remove the cat what do u do about the O2 sensors? won't u trip your chk. eng. light? I guess these trucks are good for their o2 & cats goin' so i'm lookin' to get ahead of the game, right now mine are all good.....but i'm just waiting.

You would have a better sound if you put some sort of muffler or resonator on your exhaust. Straight pipes will actually cost you some power (I can hear the argument starting already), if you install a resonator on each pipe (duals) it will filter out the high frequencies, that will make the low frequency rumble sound louder. Low frequency rumble sounds more powerfull with the highs filtered out. I assume that is what you want.
Anyone for the argument about why you would get less power from straight pipes?

I'm a believer in 3-3 1/4 inch pipe back from the cat to get a nice deep tone as oppsed to anything smaller cuz thats when you'll start to get an annoying, rapping and popping exhaust when you back off the throttle and then it sounds BAD, Just my opinion.

hey dude i have a 99 dodge 1500 5.2L i highly suggest going to a muffler shop and gettin flowmaster. thats wut i have and it sounds great. when it hits operation temp. about 210 degrees it becomes very loud

You can get plug and play o2 sims from www.thefastman.com great guy to deal with.

If you want loud REMOVE the cat. When i had my 99 i had a cat back made with no muffler and it sounded alright. I took off the cat and added some shorty headers(waste of money) and just removing the cat woke it up and it roared NOT rumbled.

True duals do not always reduce power, just dont go huge on the pipes and you'll be fine.

The real trick is to maintain adequate backpressure with whatever you do. That is why you lose power with straight pipes. You want to increase flow volume but maintane the back pressure. The factory exhaust is not only tuned for emissions, but they also tune it to play it safe on the motor, to give it longevity. Straight pipe it and you can possibly be in for valve problems down the line.

If the cat is removed and a muffler is on, would that be enuf back pressure w/factory size pipe? I currently have dual out the muffler but when my cat goes I'm thinkin' about removing it and puttin' in a pipe. Hopefully I dont have to worry about it for awhile though..

Removing the cat is illegal and you actually can face up to a $25,000 dollar fine. If you are caught tampering with removing the caught and the business also you could even get jail time. For starters it sounds obnoxious taking the cat off. Next, you wont pass emissions. Removing the cat seems like a more/less "redneck" way of one trying to easily make their truck louder and could care less about anything. Not to mention o2 sensors going out of whack. I would say removing the cat to show off to your buddies and facing a large fine/jail time, and a possibly messed up truck is completley not even worth it. I hope you find another route.

Removing the cat will not "mess up the truck" Will it cause a CEL(in some cases) yes. However the rear o2 sensors do NOTHING but monitor the cats effienency. They wont affect performance or anything else. Oh no i wont pass emissions...wait...i dont have them. Honestly if a cop said anything about me not having a cat on my current truck, (longtubes---elec cutout--magnaflow muffler) I cant see them actually throwing me in jail, maybe a fix it ticket. You can always say hey...i bought it this way. As for it being "redneck" the cats on these trucks are a HUGE restriction in our exhaust systems. If someone wants to take it off its their choice, everyone knows its illegal. He asked for loud, therefore having no restrictions in your exhaust system will make it loud.

I'm assuming you have a 4.7L. The only file there is a Flowmaster 70 series.

I had a Flowmaster 40 w/3" tips on a 4.8L Silverado. Nice and deep-sounding.

I also had a Vortex cat-back on a 2001 Ram w/dual 3" tips. Sounded pretty much the same as the Flowmaster 40.

Maybe on that GMC yeah.

What's the difference between "obnoxious" and "loud-ass"?

Another option to removing the cat is taking it off and removing the innerds of it. (like that word, innerds?). I did it years back, basically just take it off and clean out everyting inside the housing. I have know people to cut them in half (long ways) and wrap them around the pipe and weld them in place, giving the appearance that they are in line when actually the exaust runs strait through them. This won't help you emmisions issues though.

Why go through the hassle of gutting the cat when you can just remove it? Sounds like alot of unwanted work.

dont go with a flomasters, yea there good but there are better exausts out there for the money. I inhearted my truck from my brother and i believe he put new headers in my 2500 and with the stock pipe, it sounds awesome. it is louder and sounds more unique then my step sisters dodge with flowmasters. so shop around dont just go with the first one u see
