'94 ZJ Weird Rear Suspension/Diff. Diagnosis Help?wd8dky 03-27-2006, 02:25 PM Hello all. I enjoy troubleshooting/fixing, but I'm no expert, so I was hoping to garner a little advice from those far wiser than I. For background, it's a '94 Grand Laredo, 143,000 miles (we are the original owners, and it has been driven fairly gently, 95% by my wife). This is a weird one to describe. When I'm at a dead stop, and punch the accelerator, the rear end feels as though there was a 1x2 was lying in the road in front of my tire, and that I drove over it. If I accelerate gently/normally, there is no such "feeling." I don't know how else to describe it. There is no noise when this happens, and there are no other symptoms at any other speed. The differential fluids have been changed religiously at 12-15k intervals, and there is no sign of any leaks. The rear brake shoes are about 1/2 worn at the moment, and work fine. No leaks there either. Any thoughts? My thanks~ Paul fredjacksonsan 03-29-2006, 10:52 AM I'm thinking Ujoints. Have they ever been replaced? wd8dky 03-29-2006, 10:55 AM Hi! No, the U-Joints haven't ever been replaced. I always thought those came with a metallic clunk when they were going. I will check them out for play this weekend. Thank you for the suggestion! Paul fredjacksonsan 03-29-2006, 10:56 AM If your Jeep is anything like mine, sometimes you'll get a shudder when you come to a stop...I'm replacing my Ujoints at 92K this weekend. JeepForever 03-29-2006, 04:02 PM I have a similar jerky movement in my '94 Jeep GC. Sometimes it happens when gears shift, and mostly when I'm going up hill and there's more of a load on the transmission. This started after I had the transmission rebuilt and one reer U-joint replaced. I'm confident they did a good job on the transmission, but sometimes when new parts rub against old (or old against old), there's an amount of play introduced. I have 175,000 miles, so I write it off to "old-car syndrome". vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
