I recently bought a tachometer, but I m having trouble installing it, for the fact that I couldnt find the correct wire for the ignition. I did a few research, & couldnt find anything for my neon, its 2nd gen. Well if anything, some info would be great. Thanks.

if it is one of the aftermarket tachs then you will need an adapter. I have installed the autometer shift light tach and the adapter. they both can be found on advance autoparts. neons have a signal cable for the cars that came with a tach, however this signal is around 2.5-3.7V and most aftermarkets work on 12V.(at least on my '95) the signal cable is gray with a light-blue stripe. the wire for the ignition only work with the adapter and is the negative wire in the coil. don't wire the tach to that wire or you would mess the tach or the PCM.

The light-blue stripe wire is for 1 gen models, for second gen, I have no idea, I looked thru my Chilton's repair manual, & found no tacho wire, & of the tachometer instructions it reads "not supported" for 2000-2001, I dont know what theat suppose to mean, if it cant have one, or they, themselves dont know where to wire it too.

then get the adapter and run it from the coil signal. you will have to pay around $50-$70 for it. I got mine on advance autoparts (they have to order it) and the instructions were really clear.

you do not need the tach adapter for a second gen neon, depending on the tach? you can hook the signal wire to the wire running into the coil pack on top if the valve cover, i do not remember what wire it is for sure but i think it is gray do not take my word for it but there is only three or for wires there it is not that hard to figure out, do not go off of the main wire coming off of the computer or it will only read at half rpm, you will also need a tach that has a 2 cylinder rating that is why you will not need a tach adapter, if it only has a four six and eight cylinder rating guess you will have to take a trip to the parts store and get an adapter just have to look to c iff you have the 2 cylinder rating on your tach then it is simple

So I just change the cluster, it should have a plug behind the stock instrumental cluster, or do I have the buy the plug, or any type of solution, because I have tried to wire it from the top wires from the coil. It should be the same as the one that my auto start alarm is connected.....I think, cause I tried it, & no response, so I gues I'll just sell it, & see if I can just change the cluster, but let me know on that one aout the cluster with the tach on it already.

the cluster should work by just installing it.
