1998 dodge ram hard startingrd55124 03-23-2006, 02:37 PM Can anyone help me figure out why my dodge ram, 5.9L V8, after sitting for say 30 minutes or longer, is very hard to start. If I turn the key on and off say 3 or more times, it seems to start fine. Other then that I have had no other problems with this truck. I have 71,000 miles on it Thansk:banghead: scoutinkeith 03-30-2006, 11:07 AM sounds to me like the fuel system is loosing preasure. it could be that you have an injector that is leaking, or the pump/check valve may not be holding preasue in the fuel line. I'd start by disconnecting the fuel slupply line form the fuel rails, and put a fuel preasure guage on it, turn the key to the ON position(so the pump turns on), let it build preasure, then turn the key off, and watch the guage. if the guage looses preasure, you know that the problem is with the pump. if it holds preasure ok, then you know that it's a leaky injector. if it dose turn out to be the pump, you're going to have to either take the bed off, or drop the tank to get to it. tony36 03-31-2006, 02:04 AM You don't have fuel rails, correct me if I am wrong, but my 99 has throttle body, not multi port. But it does sound like you are losing pressure. scoutinkeith 03-31-2006, 09:33 AM You don't have fuel rails, correct me if I am wrong, but my 99 has throttle body, not multi port. But it does sound like you are losing pressure. well, you are half correct, assumeing that you're talking about a dodge ram with a magnum engine. yes, they do have a throttle body, but they are NOT TBI (Throttle Body Injection) engines. the throttle body on the magnum engines is just for air, and holds a few sensors. the magnum engines are SMPI (Sequential Multi Port Injection) engines. if you take a look at the engine, you will see 8 fuel injectors, 4 on each side, along with the fuel rails on the intake manifold. tony36 03-31-2006, 12:24 PM I have 99 5.2 magnum, and it is throttle body injection. I have only 2 injectors, in the top of the throtle body. It is not multiport or sequencial. I have no fuel rails. scoutinkeith 03-31-2006, 02:27 PM I have 99 5.2 magnum, and it is throttle body injection. I have only 2 injectors, in the top of the throtle body. I have no fuel rails. not trying to be a smart a$$ or anything, but all 94-01 dodge ram trucks came with MPI (Multi Port Injection) they do have a throttle body, but it's only function is to regulate the flow of air, the injectors (all 8 of them) are located on the intake manifold. just for the heck of it, I searched some auto parts websites, and the only dodge trucks that you can get replacement throttle body mounted fuel injectors for are 1991 and older. if you remove the air filter, and look into the throttle body, you will see two bores (holes) and the bottom of the intake manifold, sorry, no fuel injectors. tony36 04-02-2006, 05:57 AM not trying to be a smart a$$ or anything, but all 94-01 dodge ram trucks came with MPI (Multi Port Injection) they do have a throttle body, but it's only function is to regulate the flow of air, the injectors (all 8 of them) are located on the intake manifold. just for the heck of it, I searched some auto parts websites, and the only dodge trucks that you can get replacement throttle body mounted fuel injectors for are 1991 and older. if you remove the air filter, and look into the throttle body, you will see two bores (holes) and the bottom of the intake manifold, sorry, no fuel injectors. You are right, I apologize if I mislead anyone. I had what I refer to as a brain fart. When I wrote that for some reason My memory was thinking of a chevy I used to have(lots of problems) and it was sticking in my mind. Thanks for joggging my mind. And you didn't come off as a smart ass, I appreciate being set straight when I am wrong, I hate to be wrong, and a wrong answer does not help antbody, so thanks. PWMAN 04-02-2006, 10:44 PM Check for a clogged fuel filter as well. You might want to take a look at the 02 sensor too, that would cause warm hard starting since the ECU doesn't read the 02 on cold start-up. tony36 04-02-2006, 11:52 PM Check for a clogged fuel filter as well. It actually works quite well. My pump went at 115000 miles and before that I never had one problem. The pump has a canister on the bottom of it designed to keep the pump from overheating when the fuel level is low, but it also helps to keep debri from being sucked up since it draws from the canister and not the bottom of the tank. I tried to correct him in another thread and he told me I had an attitude. If I came off as a smart ass, you have my apologies. I am sorry. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
