95 1/2 Rodeo will not start after extended drivingEDTHEMANJP 03-22-2006, 05:58 PM I've searched threads, the Rodeo won't start after it has run for about an hour straight. You turn the ignition switch and all the warning lights come on but it's like no juice is getting to the starter. Ramblin Fever 03-22-2006, 08:10 PM Have you checked all your ground connections, as well as the juice from the battery and alternator? EDTHEMANJP 03-23-2006, 01:19 PM The negative terminal connector was loose before and I tightened it, problem continued. I also took it to a dealer about 2 months later for this same problem, they said the negative battery terminal was loose and charged me 2 hours labor to repair it $94.00 an hour, yeah. That didn't fix the problem it still happens I'm just not taking it to the dealer anymore what a rip off. My problem is: After driving a while and you go to start the car the dummy lights come on, all systems seem to be working but the starter dosen't do anything, no clicking, no whinning, nothing but after a while it will start like there was never a problem and everything is normal. There are never any check engine lights and all fuses are good. The vehicle only has 70,000 miles and I'm the orginal owner; however the vehicle sat in storage for 4 years while I was overseas working for the military. I've heard the starter because sometimes the brushes get warm and they need to cool off before they will turn but it seems like there would be some clicking or some other noise. I've heard the switch in the ignition but all the dummy lights come on. I've heard alarm systems, I'm still thinking along this route but the alarm arms and disarms no problem I've also heard the negative cable and ground connections, what ground connections do some of them come loose, wiring is a mess and to find a loose ground is very difficult. I've heard PCV valve but this only affects the engine when its cranking, mine has intermittent no engage the starter issues. Has anyone had any issues like this please help anthonyn 03-23-2006, 03:07 PM I've heard the switch in the ignition but all the dummy lights come on. I don't think you can preclude an ignition switch problem just because the dummy lights come on. I would jump the terminals on the starter motor (with a jumper cable or remote starter switch) to see if it will start consistently when bypassing the switch. If it's not the switch, then the symptoms are consistent with a bad (or going bad) starter motor. I had the same thing but would happen when cold, after the car sat for a few hours. Would take 10 or fifteen tries before it would suddenly crank. Replaced starter and everything is fine now. Super 95.5 Rodeo 03-26-2006, 08:50 PM I've searched threads, the Rodeo won't start after it has run for about an hour straight. You turn the ignition switch and all the warning lights come on but it's like no juice is getting to the starter. It's the starter. I had the exact same symptoms. All gone after I changed the starter. EDTHEMANJP 04-24-2006, 11:19 AM Men, heres another twist to this situation I've noticed that when this no start problem occurs the rear release gate actuator on the dashboard, left of the steering wheel, will not work; the rear gate release will not work and you have to open it with a key and, the vehicle will not start. Consiquently once the rear release works the vehicle will start. Can someone tell me how this sysytem ties into the ignition? Can someone tell me a fix for this? I know that the gate will not release when the drive selector is any other position than "park". 95.5 Rodeo 04-24-2006, 01:27 PM I am assuming your engine is the 3.2L with an automatic transmission installed. The rear glass release will not prevent you from starting your Rodeo (in park or neutral), in fact, i just tested that on my truck a few minutes ago. I released the glass and with the truck in park or neutral it started right up, no problem. I agree with Super 95.5 and Anthonyn, you seem to have a bad starter. Test it in the way Anthonyn suggested and let us know how things turn out. If it's not aligned correctly it won't tell the starter relay or rear hatch release that the vehicle is actually in park. Try starting your Rodeo in Neutral (the ignition should only allow you to start the vehicle in Park OR Neutral). 95.5 Rodeo 04-24-2006, 01:41 PM This pretty much points to your problem being a bad or dirty Range Selector Switch. Try starting your Rodeo in Neutral (the ignition should only allow you to start the vehicle in Park OR Neutral). Good point, it could also be a bad or dirty Range Selector Switch. It looks like more testing is in order. Good Luck, Dale EDTHEMANJP 04-24-2006, 04:32 PM sorry I didn't include this information earlier, yes the situation still exists when the vehicle is in N (3.2 automatic), even rocking the vehicle to try and move the starter brushes dosen't work. If the problem exists in N as well does this eliminate the range selector? Is the range selector in the cabin?
