CEL won't come onjudo123boy 03-17-2006, 12:16 PM I bought this 2001 Passport at used car dealer. I did'nt notice that the CEL is not coming on after the ignition switch is turned on. I tought all along that I never have any problem with the car because it is running fine. Now that my annual insection check is due, it failed the test, I was told that my CEL is not coming on. Also told that there are 4 other items that needs to be fixed. Is there a way to disable the CEL light? Could any body help me fix this CEL light. I just finished checking 106 thread, there is nothing about this problem. Thanks a lot. 95.5 Rodeo 03-17-2006, 12:34 PM Just a guess on my part, but I think someone may have removed the lamp from the lamp base because the check engine light was coming on and they wanted to sell a vehicle to an unsuspecting buyer. :( On the other hand, the lamp itself may be faulty. In any case, you need to access the lamp and check to see if it is in position and make sure the lamp is not burned out. Good luck, Dale directory 03-17-2006, 12:42 PM the bulb is either burned out or they removed the bulb or they cut the wire to the bulb marcre 03-17-2006, 04:06 PM I doubt the bulb is burned out, I'd suspect foul play. How long ago did you buy this vehicle? Do you know what codes are present? Take it to a different shop if this is beyond your repair skill and find out why it is not comming on. After you find out take it back to where you bought it and raise hell (if it seems they are the culprit). Maybe it is burned out, I doubt it. marc Gizmo42 03-17-2006, 05:51 PM I think this is the first time I have heard anyone complain about the CEL NOT comming on. I'm with the others in thinking the bulb may have been removed. Go to auto zone and have them see if they can read a code from the computer (they will do it free). I'm guessing something is wrong and its throwing a code but something is up with the bulb. highlandlake 03-17-2006, 08:04 PM I think this is the first time I have heard anyone complain about the CEL NOT comming on. . That was my first thought too - it's always the opposite problem. And I'm in agreement with the others, something's fishy. But there is a remote possibility that the bulb has malfunctioned. It that is that case, oddly enough it could be just as difficult to repair that bulb as it is to repair what could have been causing the bulb to come on if it has been disabled. Some CEL code problems cost less than $100 to fix. The dashboard bulbs are hard to reach, and if you're paying someone $70 an hour to work on it, it could cost as much as replacing an oxygen sensor. Let us know what you find out - some of us are interested in what really happened. Can we place bets? hshawn31 03-18-2006, 05:47 PM :2cents: I would take that bet....previous owner removed bulb Gizmo42 03-18-2006, 07:11 PM Just an addition. If it turns out that the CEL has been tampered with go back to the dealer and hand them the bill to get everything fixed. I dont know about where you live but in Colorado its illegal to sell a vehicle if it doesnt pass emissions inspection. The exception being if the buyer agrees in writing to take the responsability. Buying 'AS IS NO WARRENTY' is no excuse, it still needs to pass. judo123boy 03-18-2006, 10:33 PM I surely want to take it back to the dealer, but it's been a year since I bought it. I already thought that something fishy is going on the time that I bought the car, beacuse it took them 2 months before they were able to get me a new registration sticker. I also recall that when I brought it back to them for inspection, it took them several hours before they were able to get an inspection sticker. I am not familiar with Texas lemon law. If anybody here is familiar with texas lemon law I surely want to be educated and return this car to them. Regarding the buld, somebody told me that it is led so it can't be replaced. Fixing the O2 sensor, fuel sensing unit and EGR is not a problem. My concern is how to make this CEL to light up. I'd contact Isuzu themselves and see what the part# is and IF it can or can not be replaced. My initial comment to your "CEL won't come on" was going to be "Consider yourself lucky! " marcre 03-18-2006, 10:59 PM I surely want to take it back to the dealer, but it's been a year since I bought it. Definately get this problem fixed and then consider taking legal action if you feel you were taken advantage of. If this is something you can't do yourself, let your mechanic know the situation and get their opinion on what you should do and ask for advice. keep us posted, I'm curious as to how this will play out. goodluck, marc Canucklehead 03-18-2006, 11:01 PM I'd contact Isuzu themselves and see what the part# is and IF it can or can not be replaced. All of the bulbs for the lights along the bottom of the instrument cluster should be #74 bulbs. Ramblin Fever 03-18-2006, 11:21 PM All of the bulbs for the lights along the bottom of the instrument cluster should be #74 bulbs. Cool, thanks. Sorry to rob the thread for one question, but would you happen to know the bulb# for the rear bumper/license plate - been burned out for a few months, got a warning the other night:eek: . Shouldn't be too hard to find at a parts store though. Ramblin Fever 03-20-2006, 12:51 AM Sorry Ramblin, can't help you there. Shouldn't be too hard to find at a parts store though. Believe it or not, the 2 parts stores nearby don't have anything that resembles it. Can't say I've gone to serious searching around town in other stores though; we live in a fairly small town and many places only carry the obvious stuff. Paul A 03-20-2006, 10:04 AM It's NOT hard to replace the bulb! Fifteen, 30 minutes Max with a screwdriver. See my reply to the earlier post about replacing instrument bulbs.
