I've always done it with the car running becuaes their power brakes, but the barkes on our first generation luminas are just horrible to begin with.

I'm not trying to be contrary, and I've been wrong before, but my logic was always to NOT run the engine, because you are amplifying the force of the M/C piston bottoming out (which you shouldn't do anyway if you can avoid it).

Bottoming in the bore can damage the piston seals, and lead to a premature failure. Having the motor running doesn't really do anything, except make the pedal easier to push. You are still moving the same volume of fluid at the same speed.
