Blown turbo?

I have a 2005 WRX. About a year ago I installed a cold air intake, Invidia uppipe and Invidia turboback exhaust. Recently I noticed an oil leak, so I took my car to the dealrship. I just got a call saying that the oil leak is coming from my turbo and that the turbo is "blown out" because I was running too much air through it. Now, I didn't think that I could blow out a turbo just by replacing some intake and exhaust components without actually increasing my boost level. Please let me know what you think. Is it likely that my turbo is actually "blown"? If not, do I stand a chance for powertrain warranty work? I need some input as soon as possible.

Sounds more like a seal is blown, you may be able to rebuild it.

Warranty on a modified system is very slim.

SUBY GOD is telling you to step up to VF 34 :grinyes:

I don't believe that your set-up would significantly make it more likely to blow your turbo, but given those mods, it will not be covered by warranty.

There is no smoke coming out, which should be happening if there's a significant oil leak in the turbo. But, the area between compressor and turbine housing is wet with oil. I recently had my clutch replaced, and the mechanic topped my car with oil. I checked oil level today, and it was way too high. I'm afraid that this is the cause of the leak. Would this be a permanent damage, or will merely draining excess oil help?

A little excess oil won't hurt the engine, a lot of excess oil will.

Rather than just 'drain the excess', change the oil and this time only put in the volume it tells you in your owner's handbook.

I've heard from quite a few ppl running up pipes that somehow the up pipe ruined the stock turbo. I questioned, but never got a real explanation of how exactly that could happen.

Anyhow, if your turbo seals have given out, and the work isn't covered under warranty, you can get a rebuild kit for around $70, I believe. If you can't or dont want to do the work yourself just look around for a shop that specializes in turbo work.

Or just get a nice vf-34, or it's little brother the vf-22 and have some fun!!!
